Are my GHD's dying? Should I clean the plates?

Help! My lovely GHD's have done sterling service for the past 4 yrs. Hwr, they seem less effective now - it takes longer to straighten my hair and it doesn't stay as straight for as long as it used to. The flicking light is also not working - it is either on or off.
I have never cleaned the plates - do you think this will help? If so, what should I use?

If in fact they are buggered, are there now any cheaper equivalents, or am I looking a forking out about £100 again?

Ta!

If the light is not flickering maybe they are not getting hot enough?

katepol · 27/03/2008 21:36

Yes WTH, I don't think they are getting hot enough - which is why I think I should clean the plates to see if that will help, butt with what? The light is a separate issue - it is either on, or if I turn them the other way up, off . So, not sure if they are on their way out or can be rescued....
Thank you for replying , I have been feeling very billy-no-mates lol!

I'd probably clean them with that stuff you clean an iron with. Can you see dirt etc on the plates then? Mine are pristine still but that's maybe because I don't use any protection spray on my hair.
Yes - it is like straw before you ask

katepol · 27/03/2008 21:57

Hmm yes, I worry about the hair-as-straw thing - hence the iron oil, hence the need to clean the plates. Erm, what do you use to clean irons with?? I have never done that either . Can't see any visible dirt, but they must be greasy or something?

Kate

i feel your pain

Sounds like they are packing up

Mine went like that with the light either staying on or going off rather than flickering.

My dp soldered them and they lasted a bit longer, only to go again. My sister and freind had same problem. Only solution is new ones i reckon. I had to admit deafeat and get some

I wouldnt risk an alternative brand myself

carmenelectra · 27/03/2008 22:23

I had to hold mine at various angles to get light to work and i couldnt take it anymore. I was overjoyed when my new ones arrived

Not sure about the plate cleaning- ithink you should cos they do get gunked up, but i dont know what to use. This has nothing to do with the light tho. It seems a common problem.

Carmen - thank you and A*SE!
I'd better get looking on the net for whoever does quick delivery so I have a back up in case they go kaput! The prospect of no GHD's is making me wobbly

The dds trod on my old pair and they snapped in half. After running up and down howling for most of the day I ordered another pair from Ebay and they came within two days. I didn't bother looking for other products on the market just bought an exact replacement. I can't live without them!

carmenelectra · 28/03/2008 15:55

Lol at hamster
Kate i got mine straight from GHD. Ordered em FRi afternoon and they came Sat am! Most expensive option, but i didnt care!

MummyPenguin · 28/03/2008 18:22

They definitely sound buggered. I'm not sure about using anything on the plates, as it's not the same as an iron plate. I just give mine a good rub with a damp flannel. I've heard that the BaByliss pro 230 straighteners are very good. I've got some Mark Hill ones, they're originally the price of GHD's but I got mine 50% off at Christmas in the Boots sale. Boots are having reductions now, I'm not sure if the Mark Hill ones are reduced but I think you can find straighteners now that are as good as GHD's for less money. My MH ones are excellent. They're the wide plate ones as my hair's quite long now. I have normal width GHD's too.
