Struggling to find black trousers and shoes - need help!

Fushia123 · 07/03/2024 22:34

I have never owned any black clothes - the colour drains me and I much prefer jeans that hold me in, and dresses with flat shoes.
I have joined a really good choir and need black trousers and shoes for a concert soon. I have black patent brogues which I was going to wear.
I ordered a pair of black wide leg trousers from Albanay which don’t fit so have been to M and S and Next today to try some on. I look and feel awful in all of them - too long, too wide, too small. I bought some wide leg size 16 short in M and S which I thought were ok but at home, with the brogues they look awful and I feel a mess.
I’m a small 16/ big 14 and 5 ft 5. I think I may need a small heel to improve posture but don’t want too high or sandals.
Do wide leg trousers usually make someone of my height and size feel so stumpy, wide and uncomfortable? I really want to feel comfy and confident on stage and will pay more to find shoes and trousers that do the job. Would a higher heel help?
Does anyone have any advice or do I just have to go with what I’ve got and suck it up?!

Sorry if this is a stupid question given the title of your post but do you have to wear trousers? Could you wear a long black skirt instead or a black dress?

Fushia123 · 07/03/2024 23:07

No - the ‘uniform’ is black trousers and shoes. Everyone else seems to have them and wear them regularly.

I find black trousers are very much like jeans and it's a trial and error so one in 10 may fit!

I find wide trousers hard to wear in a 16 but pear shaped with big tummy and short legs so I think it's more proportions than anything

If you want cheap- matalan and TU have a vast selection to try.

I prefer a high waist and tapered as looser round hip and shaped towards ankle

Ok, it was worth a try!

Agree with a PP that black trousers can be more difficult than they should be.

Have you tried a 7/8 or 'ankle grazer' style that's tapered rather than wide? M&S used to have some in a pull-on fit. They might work with black loafers?

I bought these recently, super comfy and high waisted. I will be taking them up an inch as I'm the same size as you OP.

Iloveshihtzus · 08/03/2024 12:45

Oh OP, I feel your pain. I too have recently joined a choir with the black trousers uniform and I had to borrow some - they were uncomfortable so I will have to buy some. Apparently no one else could understand how I had no black trousers as everyone’ has a pair!!!! Well, not me, I haven’t worn black trousers in about 20 years.

henlake7 · 08/03/2024 13:13

TBH id just find a cheap pair of basic black trousers and call it a day.
If you hate wearing black and already dont think black trousers will look good then you will probably think they all look awful! hence get a cheap pair!😉

I'm a bit taller, and also a 16, also sing in a choir.

Have a Google for "magic pants". Not hugely pricey.

I just bought these wide leg linen mix trousers in black from Anthropologie and love them. They're meant to be cropped, but on my 5ft 3 frame they come up normal length. The linen is heavy and has a pleasing swish to it. They come in lots of other fabrics too.

What kind of jeans do you wear? If you wear straight or skinning then wide leg trousers will look huge. I'd try and find a pair in as similar shape as your favourite jeans.

Cuppachuchu · 10/03/2024 08:37

How about straight leg black jeans?

Mumof1andacat · 10/03/2024 08:51

I'm an 18 and find matalan trousers the best. I am short so I have to hem them but I do with all trousers. A lady I work with is a 22 and also swears by matalan trousers.

Irismarle · 10/03/2024 09:04

I am also 5 / 5 and usually a 14, but my favourite trousers are M&S 7/8 length in a slim leg - the size 12 actually fits me. I think they look good with lowish heeled black suede court shoes. Of course I’ve had them for some time so may not be cutting edge fashion like wide legs which just look awful on me.

Fushia123 · 12/03/2024 08:28

Thank you all so much for your help and advice. I’ve bought some M and S linen tapered trousers - black brogues aren’t right with them so I’m still on the hunt for shoes! Thanks again - I really appreciate your help.

I also sing in a choir with black being the uniform. Sometimes it’s more suitable to wear a dress, other times trousers.
I agree with finding something cheaper, as you’re unlikely to wear the clothes at other times.i found a lovely pair of wide leg trousers in Peacocks. Not a shop I would have thought of, but popped in on the off chance. The trousers are crepe, pull on and washable.
As for shoes comfort is important, there’s a lot of standing! I have some comfortable court/ Mary Jane style for the winter and black strappy sandals for the summer. Heel size depends on where you stand within the choir.

TheForgetfulCat · 12/03/2024 08:45

I was going to say if you’re standing for a long performance I wouldn’t recommend heels. Unless you’re in the front row the audience is unlikely to see much of your feet!

seathewayahead · 12/03/2024 08:51

How funny. I also sing in a choir which requires black trousers which I don’t own, much to the shock of other members. I have to wear flats though, heels too uncomfortable. As im both an alto and tall im usually hidden though so im thinking of getting some black leather converse and wearing those!
