Complaining about my hair looking like this...

Went to the hairdressers today. The service was balayage and a root touch up. The appointment followed a consultation and strand test a few weeks back. I explained that I wanted a few lighter pieces scattered through, rather than an all-over, super light look. Dark brown with caramel highlights, that kinda thing.

The first pic is before.

The second pic is after.

Am I going mad, or is there no discernable difference?

This cost me £150. Yes, I paid. I felt too embarrassed to say that I couldn't notice a difference, although the stylist made a point of twice reassuring me that, 'you can see it.'

I thought I might 'see it' once I took a proper look in natural lighting. I can't. It looks no different, aside from about 12 individual strands of hair that are a yellowy/orange colour - and even then, these are only apparent if you're standing directly under the light.

I've never complained about a salon before, but feel I have to now, surely!

Would you complain? And if you have complained previously, how have you dome so? Phone, email or in person??

I’d definitely go back - similar happened to DD when she was younger and we’d asked for a ‘natural’ look, I couldn’t even see a difference!!

SquishyBeanBag · 06/03/2024 21:10

Are you being serious?

Unfortunately yes.

Yes, she did mention that it was 'natural looking' as she didn't think I'd suit 'chunky highlights'...

I don't think I have any highlights!

It looks better in the 'before' picture.

Time to put on your big girl pants and go back for a fix or a refund.

MadelineWuntch · 06/03/2024 21:16

Well at least they haven't ruined it 😂

But yes, £150!? At least Dick Turpin had the decency to wear a mask

Did you take a picture as a guide? Not that it matters but it does help the argument.

That's worthy of a phone call asking for a re-do. It's awkward but will be worth it. It looks lovely but it's not balayage and there is a such a light difference in colour they can't justify the cost.

They will likely use the excuse of it taking steps so the hair isn't damaged. It's a fair excuse (to a point) but even with that, you could have got infinitely lighter.

Thanks for your advice, Heft.
I did show a few pictures at the consultation, but admittedly, this was weeks ago. I'm pretty laid back- I just wanted it brightened up a bit. I wasn't too hung up on pictures as just thought it can't get any worse than what I started with! 😅
I was thinking of emailing tonight and attaching the photos, then following up with a call either tomorrow or Friday, if no response...

If they have an email address and you feel more comfortable then go with that. I've just re-read the OP and if she felt she had to reiterate that you could see it without you saying then she knew!

Re-do or money back and don't be afraid to ask for the money back if it's still not right the second time.

HidingFromDD · 07/03/2024 06:35

If you email the pictures put them in a different order and don’t say which is before and after. Ask them to explain how it meets the brief. My guess is that they will justify using whichever picture is on the right

VioletPickles · 07/03/2024 06:37

Hair looks better (and in better condition) before.

Justleaveitblankthen · 07/03/2024 07:09

It looks beautiful, glossy and healthy.. in the first photo 😬
I would kill for hair like yours.
Go back OP, that was a huge amount of money to pay for such a result.

What was your inspiration picture? It looks a little bit lighter, I wouldn't say it's a balayage though? Although quite hard to tell from the pic due to lighting.
How did it look when she had finished and showed you it?
