Can a hair cut change how your hair has always behaved?

I have a big quiff, virgin grey hair two to three inches at the shortest, normally about four inches at trim time.

It is a smaller version but a very similar shape to the Wiki picture that comes up if you google the word 'quiff' - clipped to a number 3 around the sides. My hair wants to stand straight up naturally so it suits the style and normally is very well-behaved and has been for years.

I had a cut with a stylist I have used before, but she's not my main stylist (who was unwell) and I think she's killed my quiff and I don't understand how.

I'm two weeks in since the cut and my hair just wants to part in the middle of the quiff and fall outwards forming the shape of two horns 👿. I don't use products as my hair normally wants to go upwards so happily dries in that position.

I've had to start using a plethora of products to try a keep it in place but I've just looked in the mirror and once again, having a hot and busy day it's split and is forming two horns.

Why would this happen?

I should mention I think she was a bit irritated and distracted when she did the cut because of some drama going on in the salon. So think she may have been on autopilot when cutting (she herself admitted she was distracted because she cut herself while rubber-necking)

I have the horrible feeling she auto-piloted a man's hair cut, you know the one with all the hair on the top flat brushed forwards and flipped up a bit at the front? (because that's how she styled it too)

Or is there no such thing as a blokes haircut? 😆

Is it possible it's just too long?

MrsCurmudgeon · 05/03/2024 15:50

@NotestoSelf - It is the same size it has always been, I have had the style for quite some time now. I was there for a trim so she made it shorter so I would be surprised if length was the issue.

In my Mohican days, the middle bit flopped when it was too long producing the horn effect.

I just backcombed it with a tin of hairspray. But you should go back to the hairdresser.

Did the stylist thin it out, so there's not enough 'body' to stick up at the required angle?

(I'm now intrigued by your quiff, and want to see photos of it both erect and divided into 'horns'...)

I went out for drinks with a friend last night and the first thing she commented on was my hair.

She took a look and she thinks the stylist has very bluntly staggered the hair up the sides and also up from the front. So the front fringe of the quiff is a good few centimetres shorter than the section behind and the same again to the section behind that - when normally it is all the same length.

She thinks the shorter bits are causing the quiff to flop outwards. so instead of my hair being cut at the ends at the front to this shape '-' it is more this shape 'n'

Update

I was at my normal stylist yesterday and now all is right with the world.

She had to take quite a bit off to even up the layers that were cut in. So I look like a Henry Cavill in Argyle rather than my normal quiff, but it's a work in progress.

I no longer have horns and it has gone back to standing up on its own

Glad it's sorted, very annoying that you paid for a cut that destroyed your hairstyle!!
