How do you wear wide trousers?

I've got some wide trousers I'm wearing with thick soled loafers. What else can you wear them with. And also, are they supposed to be a bit short on you. That looks ridiculous on me and I prefer them with a slight break.

I assume you're under 25, over 5' 10" and under 8 stone? Otherwise they don't flatter anyone, in my opinion!

Brackenfield · 04/03/2024 16:11

I wear them with veja trainers, and prefer them a bit short/cropped but as a short arse that isn't often possible!

I'm also well past 25/being a size 8 and they look good on me so..

Sususudio · 04/03/2024 16:17

Eh? I am 52, 10.5 stone, a size 10-12 and they look good on me, I think.
I wear them with trainers, boots, sandals in summer. I wear them long enough to touch the tops of my shoes.

wheresmyshoe · 04/03/2024 16:18

I love them, particularly if they're linen. I don't do ankle flapping trousers and wear them with gazelles or wedges if casual and ballet pumps, loafers or heels if formal. I'm 5'7", size 12, mid forties.

Flockameanie · 04/03/2024 16:19

I wear mine with brogues or trainers. Don't like the way they look with boots. I wear mine like @Sususudio to touch the top of my shoes (I'm 5'7")

I actually saw a woman in the short / ankle length ones yesterday, and they looked terrible TBH. I’d like to try them, but worry they’d make me look wide in general? I’m size 14, and used to wear them when young & slim. Could I try them again?

stardust777 · 04/03/2024 16:28

Would any of these looks work?

Flockameanie · 04/03/2024 16:29

'wearsmymoney' on instagram wears hers shorter and with trainers most of the time. I think it looks good on her, but I'm not sure I could carry it off

Sususudio · 04/03/2024 16:31

I am also 5'7. I wear them with a semi fitted jumper or shirt. I think you can wear them whatever size you are. They are a bit annoying in the rain though.

BarrelOfOtters · 04/03/2024 16:42

I'm 5'7" and mid 50s and size 14 (ish) but with the right top they seem to look OK. So I'm probably doing it wrong.

With a high waist and and top tucked in. I’m a 10-12, 5 foot 5 and 10 stone, I’ve been told they look good. I’ve short legs and they elongate my lower half once the waist is visible.

shenandoahvalley · 04/03/2024 16:51

I think you have to wear them with a top that goes no lower down than your hip bones, ideally stops somewhere between belly button and hip bones. And, nothing too bulky otherwise you risk looking like a sausage cinched in at the waist. No heels, has to be flat shoes (kitten heels at a push if they're long enough). I love them, they're very comfortable, forgiving, flattering when worn right (and I'm wellllll over 25, nowhere near 5'10" and the last time I was under 8 stone was some decades ago!).

Yes, I agree. A dark top also works well if you are carrying weight round the middle.

I’ve got wide legged linen trousers and I love them on. I wear them with a fitted top and a shacket or blazer with converse or Nike trainers.

I love wearing mine and I’m 47 a size 14/16 and 5ft8”.

Winter3000 · 04/03/2024 17:22

I stopped wearing them about 15 years ago.
They make me look huge.

Puppylucky · 04/03/2024 18:01

I've just bought a pair of the Tu wide leg jeans recommended in another thread and I'm in love! I'm very short and fat so the jeans break on my shoe and Im wearing them with almond toe high tops and hip length jumpers (still cold). It just feels like such a fresh look.

TheLeadbetterLife · 04/03/2024 18:14

I've always looked good in wide leg trousers, so I'm delighted that they're back (and I've never been a size 8 in my life - I don't think it's physically possible, I'm built like a Viking).

I feel comfortable and confident in them, and I like that they take up space - I'm not interested in apologetically making myself look as small as possible.

I prefer them to the ground with a break, too, and high-ish waisted. In the Summer (which where I live is from April to October), I wear linen ones with crop tops and open shirts or silk duster jackets. In the Winter I wear wool trousers or jeans with tucked-in shirts, or long-sleeved cotton and merino tops. Cropped or tucked-in jumpers, or an open cardigan.

FleurdeSel · 04/03/2024 18:38

Trainers or more usually flats.

I wear a top with a french tuck on high waisted ones.

SallyWD · 04/03/2024 18:51

I'm tall, a size 12 and pear shaped. They look awful on me. They make my already large bottom half look huge!

itsannie86 · 04/03/2024 19:28

I wear them a lot, just with my usual knee high boots underneath, or in summer Birkenstocks or loafers. I also like to go baggy on top with them, like a loose shirt or sweater.
