Prom dress/outfit

Can anyone help find a prom dress or other fancy outfit for teen DD please?

She is just under 4' 11'' tall, about a size 10 at M&S, very hourglass shape with 28E chest. She usually wears baggy t shirts and jeans. Budget under £100 or cheaper preferably as she won't wear it again.

DD has decided she does want to dress up as her friends want to go but neither of us have any idea where to shop. Because of her shape it is very easy for her too look way too "booby", she wants to look dressy but not too grown up.

It needs to have decent straps or short sleeves to hide bra straps. Not too long as she is tiny, also not to short but just above the knee is fine. She doesn't like itchy things so possibly won't tolerate sequins.

I have no idea where to suggest so any ideas will be gratefully received!

Prom dress shops are quite pricey starting at £200 . One thing we did notice was that sizing goes as low as size 2 for some dresses .

I would still go prom dress shopping to find the style your daughter likes / sizing and then look for the brand on Vinted . Be prepared to factor in some adjustments to the dress .

Good luck ... I was dreading it but we hit the jackpot on our first shop ( 4 dresses tried on ) within our budget . Plus daughter went for a completely different colour than what she initially wanted !

My DD got hers in an Oxfam shop for £10 - if you can find an Oxfam that does Bridal/prom (we found one with a whole floor of them) then you could be quids in. We did have to get it adjusted which was quite costly due to the style of the dress but it was perfect on her. My DD is very into sustainability/recycling so this was a great option.

I'd look on Vinted or eBay at that price . We got dd on sale and it was still £250. They are normally a lot more expensive. I'd avoid jj house etc as quality is likely to be poor.

Thanks all, I'll pass everything on to her.

I like those from Debenhams, thanks @AuntiePushpa

She didn't like the suggested ones but the Debenhams search led to this one that she does like. It's not petite so not sure it will fit her proportions but it's a start!

We found vinted very helpful as a way of getting ideas for prom dresses - what my daughter liked and didn't like.

Thanks everyone. DD thinks it's a bit weird but says thank you for your help!

I hadn't thought of looking for the petite Coast dress somewhere else, I'll get searching.

My granddaughter has just got exactly what she wanted at Next ... lots of choice. Quiz also have some beautiful inexpensive dresses.

Suggestion .... look at the prom photos from last year on the school website ... it may give her a good idea of what she does/doesn't want.

Karen Miller do some petite dresses - if you look on Debenhams, how about the Karen Miller Petite Stretch Sequin Woven Midaxi Dress? (sorry, can't do links).

Woodenflooring · 04/03/2024 20:34

Also, the Coast Petite Bandeau Jacquard Midi Dress. The colour mightn't be to everyone's taste though! It comes with thin straps. Dress may well hold up well with the thin straps and a good strapless bra. If not, then sewing wide navy grosgrain ribbon straps on to the dress would cover bra straps.

We ordered a few from ever pretty and sent back what wasn't right, she's settled on one that will need some adjusting but the dress was less than £60, bra solution will be another £20 I imagine, then some sparkly shoes. My daughter's circle of friends aren't going all out for prom, I think a lot of parents have said they can't afford what they have had in previous years, I'm hiring a specific car for her and 2 mates (cost shared) which her brother is driving (not sure why but he's always wanted to take her to prom 🤷🏼‍♀️) so all in it's less than £200 inc ticket which is a lot less than I thought it'd be.

ASOS is a good site for petite frocks, pretty cheap

But there are thousands of prom dresses on Vinted for a fraction of your budget - I’d start there
