90s style suede loafers/ Sarah Lucas

For years now I have kept my eye out for the kind of casual loafers I used to wear as a kid and teenager in the 90s. Usually made of suede, a chunky -ish profile, moccasin style seams, maybe a platform. Often Kickers-adjacent, but not school shoes! Now that chunky loafers have been in style for a while, I was hoping I'd find some.

I was at the National Portrait Gallery the other week and I noticed the Self Portrait with Fried Eggs by Sarah Lucas (https://images.app.goo.gl/ASW213AtetUHT95a6) and I realised that this was the look/shoe (minus eggs) that I was after. Not be a philistine, I know art doesn't just exist for my style inspo....

Can anyone help me look?
These are perfect but my budget is more like... £60 https://shoethebear.co.uk/products/iona-loafer-suede-loafers-algae?gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQiA5-uuBhDzARIsAAa21T8XnbAWPi3G3Mp1Rqp3co2S5u0mxT2aKICiacM3siefJvdlAoi07QsaAvdUEALw_wcB

Thank you!!

I reckon those are Patrick Cox? Similar styles by Clark’s originals wallabees or funny dream ? Have a look on eBay , I’ve often found brand new on box for a similar budget.

I'm obsessed with loafers too! I bloody love them. The Dr Martens Adrian Virginia leather tassel loafers would do the job, they are quite pricey but the coloured ones are usually reduced when the sales are on

floppybit · 26/02/2024 00:55

M&S have some good chunky ones in at the moment too for £40

MoreRainbowsPlease · 26/02/2024 02:21

These aren't the suede ones, but if you like the mock croc look these are reduced to £42 at House of Fraser. https://www.houseoffraser.co.uk/brand/shoe-the-bear/iona-print-loafers-232844#colcode=23284405

We wore wallabies which are very similar and it looks like ASOS sell them now.

Mindmeld2023 · 27/02/2024 06:28

Thanks so much!!
Yes I had completely forgotten about Patrick Cox, I didn't realise that the company had closed down!
Good call on the Wallabies, for me I don't like the continuous sole, but it's definitely in the right ballpark. Will have a look at the M+S and DMs ones.
@floppybit can I ask, what do you wear yours with? I pretty much only ever wear straight leg or mom jeans, and I just wonder if they would look right?

I love these and have been stalking them for a couple of years. They went down to £60ish after Christmas so if you hang on the price might improve. If you have an account and put them in your cart they send you a 15% discount.

Your pic explains why I like them so much 😀 I'm a scruffy 90s indie kid at heart.

lollipoprainbow · 28/02/2024 05:49

Damn you now I want a pair!!

Mindmeld2023 · 28/02/2024 06:03

Haha @lollipoprainbow they are nice, aren't they?! I have emailed to ask how heavy they are, because I have dodgy knees and can't wear anything too heavy. Here's hoping they are massive clonkers and then I won't be spending £120 on shoes that I can't even return cheaply if they don't fit because they have to be sent back to Denmark...

@greeneggsandhamhocks yes me too! Even if I try and dress a bit more smartly, I just look like I'm on my way to see some band at the Wolverhampton Little Civic in 1997.

@urbanbuddha Love those Daniel ones apart from the pale sole, but they are definitely going on the mental back burner, thank you!!

@Mindmeld2023 they have some on eBay but slightly too big for me ! I'll keep looking.

Mindmeld2023 · 28/02/2024 13:24

@Squit oh amazing!!!! Sadly too small for me....

I mostly wear mine for work with big checked trousers. Out of work I must admit I haven't really worn them with anything other than mom jeans (excellent socks required) or some Arket balloon leg trousers. I don't think I could wear them with a skirt without looking ridiculous, but other people seem to pull this off...

floppybit · 28/02/2024 17:47

By the way, some of the chunky soled ones have soles that don't bend when you walk which makes them impossible to walk in properly. I've sent back loads of pairs that don't have flexible soles. It's worth going round the shops and trying a load on.
