I'm going out for dinner with a group of girls. Relaxed restaurant in a small city, probably cocktails in a bar afterwards. I'm 41, slim but not very toned, size 8, carry weight on bum/ hips/ thighs. Open to dresses or jeans but in desperate need of some inspiration! Feel like I've no clue what's in style any longer post kids, covid etc etc! Help me out ladies! xx

@Ratherstandonacliffandsetfiretomyself you look amazing!

CoffeeAndStripedtops · 26/02/2024 11:39

I'm same body type as you, and am planning on wearing a silk Sezane Chlo shirt (I've got the powder pink one) with some skinny jeans and either leather trainers/ballet pumps or ankle boots...

I found it quite depressing that even a size 8 feels she has to mention that she is "carrying weight"

Why? A size eight doesn't mean someone has zero body fat or no shape at all.

There are plenty of size eight clothes that would look really unflattering on me. I still have to consider where my curves are and choose things that flatter me.

We should be able to talk about these things.

Of course a size 8 doesn't mean there is no fat.

What is depressing is the obsession that everything has to be chosen from the point of view of trying to make the wearer look thin.

I can't see anyone mentioning wanting to look thin.

This is Style and Beauty on an anonymous forum. We can't see each other so it's usual to give a description of yourself so people know what to recommend. It's really not that deep.

Honestly, would you have reacted the same if OP had been a size ten?

HenleyHenley · 26/02/2024 12:54

I'm firmly an 'out in the summer' and don't bother keeping up with trends and still love skinny jeans!
I'm guessing I'm a similar build to you OP as I'm a size 8 too.

I always think blazers with jeans look smart. And blazer coats (I love my read one from Zara) and when I wear dresses I normally keep it quite casual by wearing a shirt dress.

I know these pics aren't for everyone's taste but thought I'd add a couple of what I've worn in summer and recently in the post.

Wanting to wear flattering clothes doesn’t mean you want to look thin fgs

Perhaps "thin" was the wrong word "hide" or "cover up" might be better. There's more to clothes being flattering than just hiding.

HenleyHenley · 26/02/2024 14:12

@IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle

What does wanting to wear flattering clothes have to do with wanting to look thin?

Sounds like you're projecting there a little..

Of course people want to wear flattering clothes and feel confident. Why wouldn't they?
If a size 18-20 came on here saying they wanted to wear flattering clothes, would you pass the same comment?

Love that Zara jacket it's fabulous

Again, no one said hide either. I have to agree with PP that this sounds like projection.

OP just said she was a pear shape. That's why I haven't recommended anything - because I'm a top heavy hourglass so my clothes likely wouldn't suit her.

For me, if I want to choose something flattering, it would need to be nipped in at the waist. That's the opposite of trying to hide my figure!

HenleyHenley · 26/02/2024 14:40

@ladygindiva thank you!

It's pretty old but I love a timeless smart jacket

Whatwouldnanado · 26/02/2024 15:13

Love the blue dress, thank you. Comments about OP size are rude and unnecessary. I am 5’2” 8-10 and am conscious of putting on weight. I don’t like it when my clothes are tight and want to be healthy, avoid pressure on my joints and keep fit. It’s just being responsible.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 26/02/2024 15:50

Not me (a long time since I've been a size 8) but a friend of mine is similar size to OP. When out she's worn embellished or ripped jeans, Valentino cage shoes and a nice top which shows off her toned shoulders and arms (she's a gym bunny). She accessorizes with either a blazer or peplum jacket or another nice jacket.

I'm sort of curvy/pear, 5ft5, size 12 (large 10) and with jeans I can do most styles - it's the top I go for - has to fit well, suit me and have the jacket to go with it. I have narrow shoulders and back, large boobs (they don't look large but are!) slim waist and wider hips, so have to think about that. Recently I've bought a stunning Object shirt which is a bit like this one, only more high necked and with zipped cuffs and more black but with cream lace detailing down the front. It's stunning and I'd actually wear it out with my new black leather Object bomber jacket. With either indigo jeans or black jeggings.

@Myotherusernamesafunnyone I'm selling a black Jigsaw silk shirt in an 8 on ebay, BNWT. Only selling as I had my colours done and I'm light summer (and I know it doesn't suit me). Just in case you want to check it out!

hashisucks · 26/02/2024 16:13

Oh and my going out 'fits (same size as you) are either:

silk blouse with jeans (currently tend to be wider legged), blazer and ankle boots
leather midi skirt with fine knit cashmere or merino jumper and knee boots
silk slip skirt with jumper and knee boots
jumpsuit
dress with knee boots (could be short or midi)

I don't think "flattering clothes" or "attractive clothes" or "nice clothes" are limited to clothes which show off my figure.

I don't understand what you're getting at by projection or why you think I would think anything different whatever the person's size is.

Comments about OP size are rude and unnecessary. I am 5’2”

My point was that the obsession about weight and finding flaws with yourself is depressing whether you're an 8 or an 18.

lemmefinish · 26/02/2024 18:43

TBF size 8 at 4ft 6 is going to look totally different than 5ft 11!
Its kinda meaningless without knowing someones height as well.

Exactly! That’s why I don’t get the obsession with size alone.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 26/02/2024 18:46

My French friend who’s just 5ft and an 8-10 wears lots of different outfits to go out in. But a lot are French inspired.

These are my latest from going out for a smart meal, couple of drinks. They are all around Christmas time though. I’m late 30s, short, size 8 but carry more weight around hips and thighs

Your figure is amazing!

Ratherstandonacliffandsetfiretomyself · 26/02/2024 18:57

@Naptrappedmummy thank you so much! I do try and work at it as much as possible but I’m an everything in moderation girl… oh and the boobs are fake 🤣

This! I am a 10 but my BMI is overweight due to being a shortie.

Jesus it's all a bit unnecessary ladies. OP asked a simple question - this is not AIBU!

That leather skirt is gorgeous - I have a few similar and tend to wear with satin cami, blazer and shoe boots.
I also love a mini shirt dress with skinny knee high boots.
I'm 6-8 5 foot 3 and definitely have flabby wobbly bits 😀
