I'd quite like to go for a new look and i've heard curly hair is back in.

The side bits are about 1/2inch past my jaw level, don't really know what sort of perm or style to go for, help pls

I have seen this look fab on someone before but I have curly hair and I think I could look a little bushy..so depends on your hair

Don't do it! Don't you remember what they used to look like when they grew out? Could you use tongs or something instead?

Having a perm was so easy to care for my hair back in the 1980s! Big hair suits me and I wish perms would come back in fashion. One of the most beautiful hairstyles I have seen was my friends sister who had below her waist length black hair which was permed in some trendy london salon using chopsticks!

Be careful or you'll look like a mushroom voice of experience

I'd be wary! What about some ceramic heated rollers? I bought some babylis ones for around £39, they're really easy to use and then you can be curly sometimes but not stuck with a Deidre if it goes wrong.
If you don't want to invest, do you have ceramic straightness? They're also good for curling.

It would jump up so much. Practise a lot with tongs or rollers first.

I used to have perms on my medium length, layer cut bobbed hair about 25- 30 years ago.
They aren't trouble free- you still need to blow dry unless you want a Medusa look. They also make your hair quite dry and of course they grow out- so like hair colouring you have to have them redone or you end up with straight roots.
If you want a 'wash and wear' perm then they are okay- but otherwise they need to be 'tamed' like any hair cut and style.

I'd never ever have one again because unless you want a really curly style then you can get the right 'look' imo with a good cut.

Digital perms done well look beautiful but I think they are usually done on longer hair.

Yes like spotty I was going to warn of 'mushroom head condition'
