Tell me/show me your low maintenance hair styles please.

I’m in desperate need of easy, chic options that are pretty much guaranteed to look good. My hair only seems to look decent when it’s down with a fair amount of effort put in.

Wearing my hair in a bog standard ponytail today. It looks rubbish.

@housethatbuiltme would you mind sharing a pic? Your hair sounds just like mine no matter what the hairdresser has tried cutwise it always looks awful. Fully acknowledge that my “wash it and leave it” approach doesnt help.

I would love to see a pic too. I want to get away from the bob.

EmmaStone · 24/02/2024 10:14

I've got very fine straight hair, and spent many years with it short - pixie length. Just before lock down I started growing it (and stopped dying it as it was getting harder to keep on top of the grey). It's been basically a lob ever since, I recently had some long bangs cut in so I can have flicky face framing bits, but my hair is the easiest it's ever been, I can't believe it. I can air dry it, bouncy blow dry, straighten, curl, I leave it longer between washes (had to wash every day when short, otherwise it was too flat). It's completely silver (but I use a colour depositing shampoo, and keep it pink or purple - obviously that's just a matter of taste!).

FloralQuestions · 24/02/2024 11:35

I have a blunt cut, mid neck length, bob.

I have fine, wavy, flyaway hair. I wash it daily, brush it wet, smoosh so serum or leave in conditioner in - and the let nature take its course.

Unless it's rainy or ultra humid, it looks fairly neat.

I think they call it a "French girl bob"

Thighdentitycrisis · 24/02/2024 12:05

@justasoul
I love this but I have really thick really curly hair and can’t imagine ever getting my hair to look and move like that!

I always wear it curly though. Is your hair like hers or thicker?

Soccermumamir · 24/02/2024 12:10

Medium length hair here. I have had so many different hairstyles over the years. My hair is naturally thick, so I get layers put in and has a natural wave to it. I can wear it straight, wavy or curly, but it has to be a decent length. If I get it cut too short it doesn't hang right.

Soccermumamir · 24/02/2024 12:12

FringeOrNo · 23/02/2024 17:13

Short bob here. I just brush the parting where I want in when it’s wet and put a tiny bit of cantu cream in . That’s it. My hair is quite thin and if it gets much past chin length looks straggly, tatty and is quite ageing.

i have tried to show a selection of length / fringe combos.

not arsed about having my pic on here as have NC’d to the same name as I used on a thread about hair (and showed my face on)

it ranges from ear length to chin length. Sometimes I have a shorter fringe or sometimes a long swept to the side fringe. Can also wear nice alice bands with it - I like to knotted fabric ones. I just make sure some of the “fringe” is pulled forward and visible out the front of the band.

I keep it shorter and a bit “stacked” (only a bit”) at the back because I’m paranoid about having a flat head!

Love your hair 😍

Thighdentitycrisis · 24/02/2024 12:13

I have curly hair and have had this pixie before.

Mine is like a long bob with choppy layers and shorter bits at the front - so I can tie it up but down it accentuates the wavy aspect of my hair for body as it's quite fine. At most I tip it upside down to blow dry if feeling fancy.

JonnyTheDogFacedBoy · 24/02/2024 09:06

I have long (to mid bra strap) straight hair. It looks best when freshly washed, blow dried, and ends curled with straighteners. However, that takes about an hour and I rarely have that spare.

My go to is a sleek bun. Centre parting, neat bun at nape of neck. I'm not setting the world on fire, but it's smart, practical, easy to do, and looks OK with unwashed hair.

I do this with mine as well. Especially for the gym and most work days if I can not be bothered to style it lol

PuppyMonkey · 24/02/2024 12:29

I have a bob, it’s the style I get fed up of but then always go back to. You do have to style it after you wash it, I blow dry and straighten. But then you don’t need to do anything else with it for the next 2-3 days and it always falls neatly into place. I get it trimmed every six weeks.

I like to think mine is thicker than hers but it’s thinned a fair bit since menopause - I just haven’t accepted it yet Grin

Here’s mine straight and curly. I’ve grown it out since because I’m too lazy to maintain it but it grew out really nicely too, no odd stages.

Love the curly look. It looks amazing 🙂

justasoul · 24/02/2024 12:34

@Soccermumamir thank you Blush

Thighdentitycrisis · 24/02/2024 16:37

@justasoul
your hair looks lovely in both versions. I’m tempted.

My curl is a bit tighter though and springs up A LOT when shorter.

It’s been a long time since I had a Bob too

justasoul · 24/02/2024 21:04

@Thighdentitycrisis thanks ☺️ I didn’t think too much, I decided to do it in the morning and got an appointment for the afternoon… I thought ‘what’s the worst that could happen?’ - I’d have to wear a hat for 6 months or so if it went wrong Grin

housethatbuiltme · 24/02/2024 09:09

I would say don't go short unless you go really short.

I find bob length etc... requires a lot of styling normally. Hairdressers ALWAYS give me a bob no matter what I ask for and its annoying, hard work and looks terrible on me.

I now cut my own hair, I do the wolf/unicorn cut style but my layers aren't that short on top (shortest layer is about lips length). Its DESIGNED to look wild and messy which means with my thin, frizzy, wavy/curl hair I dont have to do anything and as long as its not really greasy it looks great.

Might not work on polka straight hair but if you have thin and kinky hair its fantastic... I imagine its good for thick hair too as the layers would remove a lot of weight.

Edited

I had this style done on my last hair cut. I have very thick wavy/curly hair.

I don't think the layers work well for the thickness of my hair when I leave it to dry naturally. I look like a mushroom, and same when I straighten it. If I take time to style my natural curls it's marginally better but takes alot more work than it's worth.

OP my go to easy hair style of either braids with face framing piece left down, or simple updo

WhoaJayShettybambalam · 24/02/2024 22:02

@FringeOrNo I’ve said before on another hair thread but I have total envy!

Chypre · 24/02/2024 22:05

"Long bob". Trim/ends clean up every 3 months, blow dry (heat protection spray + big round brush, divide hair in 3 sections aka sides and top) and dry shampoo between washes.

tigerbear · 24/02/2024 22:09

@Illpickthatup that’s exactly what I’d like!
how do you get that kind of wave?

GlitteringUnicorn · 24/02/2024 22:10

This!
Hairdrying used to take hours. Now 5-10 mins max every 3 days. So much, much easier in comparison

I normally post this in the ‘going grey’ threads but I’ve had a variation on this for years. I wash it every 2/3 days and do run the straighteners through it most days but not always.

I just use a wide barrelled curling tong. Don't wrap the hair round repeatidly to create a curl, but just around once pulling the hair down the length of the barrell if that makes sense. Then run your fingers through.
