I just want a black v neck jumper!

Where have all the good quality basics gone? I am admittedly plus size (20), but I cannot find a basic black v neck jumper anywhere. Everything either has stupidly huge sleeves, or glitter, or is cropped, or ribbed, or has some other embellishment. Or it's made entirely of acrylic / polyester, or at the other end of the scale it's pure cashmere and costs a fortune.

Can anyone recommend anywhere I can try???

Watching this avidly!

I only buy men's jumpers now. Women's jumpers are all too short, I like a jumper to come down to my bum, not highlight my wobbly middle and, as you say, they all have stupid sleeves or ridiculous shapes.
Men have decent, straightforward clothes. With pockets.

Uniqlo merino

thedevilinablackdress · 22/02/2024 11:43

Woolovers will probably have what you want.
And like PP I often go for men's M&S jumpers.

NotARealWookiie · 22/02/2024 11:47

i find jumpers are getting shorter…probably to make them cheaper to make

StoatofDisarray · 22/02/2024 11:47

Try Cos?

PinkMildred · 22/02/2024 11:48

You need M&S men’s department.

PinkMildred · 22/02/2024 11:49

Oh didn’t see the post above. Yes - agree. I got a fabulous (crew neck) merino wool black jumper in M&S men’s recently

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 22/02/2024 11:51

Can I add that the men's section in charity shops is often crammed full of excellent quality jumpers? I also recommend M&S, but I've had a lot of luck in my local charity shops (I assume that the jumpers are being bought for the men, who never wear them, and disgruntled wives are hoiking them out to the charity shops, as lots of them are unworn).

I buy M&S men's cardigans, their jumpers are good too:
Pure Extra Fine Merino Wool V-Neck Jumper | Autograph | M&S (marksandspencer.com)
I'm size 18 and buy XL for a not tight not baggy fit. Men also get the option of extra long which is useful for me. (I just turn the cuffs back.)

If you only want to buy women's they have this but currently out of stock in larger sizes:
Pure Merino Wool V-Neck Jumper | M&S Collection | M&S (marksandspencer.com)

Edited PS - try John Lewis as well Smile

ArtichokeAardvark · 22/02/2024 12:41

Thank you everyone, and especially @WrinklesShminkles for the size guidance! Looks like I'm off to M&S.

Yes yes yes! I have a big bust and a long torso so frequently find jumpers sit above my hips, drives me mad. And ordering longline means you get a mid thigh tunic.

Woolovers are excellent for all sorts of knitwear.

StepCombatAttack · 22/02/2024 12:49

I tried to buy a plain black v neck in M and S a while ago. Such a basic item.
I was told they don’t stock them any more.
Maybe I need to have another look. I don’t want cashmere, just nice quality.

Were you in the mens' department? Their women's jumpers are a bit rubbish, always too short for me (I'm busty), but the mens are great.

Ulysees · 22/02/2024 14:56

I had that problem and I have a long torso. I got one off vinted. I'll be looking at m&s men's though.

dontcallmelen · 22/02/2024 14:58

Just bought a M&S black V neck merino jumper, I’m short though so length not an issue for me, might be worth trying though.

FeelinSpendy · 22/02/2024 15:22

Those of you buying men’s jumpers, has anyone tried the men’s T-shirts at M&S?
I tried a men’s sweatshirt but the proportions were sadly all wrong. There’s some lovely-looking T-shirts though. Exactly what I’ve been looking for but think they’ll be too big (I’m a women’s small). The men’s department looks infinitely superior to the women’s. Much better fabrics and colours, excellent quality basics. The women’s section is so disappointing in comparison.

Yes, Woolovers.

This is lovely if you want long line. They probably have others if you want a shorter style._
