Which hairstyle is easiest to manage - long, bob, short?

My hair is thick with a slight wave. I usually wear it long (mainly because I am lazy about going to the hairdressers.) It is hard to manage when it gets too long. Also It does get greasy so I need to wash it every other day at least.

I recently had it cut to shoulder length and it’s ok but still feels unruly. It needs to be styled (curly or straight) and I prefer to wash and go.

I would love it short short with a quiff but not brave enough I don’t think.

Which type of hairstyle is easiest to manage if you’ve got hair like mine which could look nice but I can’t be bothered to style it day to day? I’m wondering about a really short chin length bob so I haven’t got so much hair to deal with.

You can always tie long hair up. Anything too short for a ponytail will need styling surely?

I've got very thick hair and I wouldn't have a bob because it would look like lego hair. Mine is dead straight though, that probably doesn't help!

NotMeNoNo · 18/02/2024 20:20

My hair is similar I have a textured pixie cut. Cut every 6 weeks, essential. Rest of the time 2 minutes a day.

NotMeNoNo · 18/02/2024 20:24

To add, I've had bobs and the blow-drying was relentless, even if I got it straight then it was too thick and "big". I've never had it longer than just below shoulders, as it's so thick it was hard to put up interestingly and I got bored of ponytails.

RuthW · 18/02/2024 20:31

Unless it's an inch short , the shorter it is the harder it is to style and the longer it takes.

CJ4713 · 18/02/2024 20:31

Mine is thick and 2c on those curl charts. I nearly always had it long, bra strap length, but then it was getting far too long. Last month I had it cut to just above the shoulders. I now find I need to wash it every few days, whereas before, could get away with longer. I can still clip it up, its far quicker to dry and if I did style it- it would be quicker to do. Problem is- I WFH and equally can't be arsed blow drying/straightening/curling it.

Missingmyusername · 18/02/2024 20:35

Long is easier for me, anything short needs styling.

Quizine · 18/02/2024 20:36

Mine's shoulder length. It's not that thick either so it's ok to blow dry into some sort of shape. No fringe just a bit graduated from side to back, hardly noticeable but looks good when properly styled which is rare

I know now having gone through the Covid home cuts (short and disastrous) to the slightly longer length now, that I'd never have shortish hair again. I absolutely must be able to clip it up with a claw, and leave the sides wispy around the face. Messy look ha ha. So easy and I can get away with not spending ages in front of the mirror trying to style/straighten/curl it etc.

Enough length to put it up is the one for me anyway!

Long. Leave loose, tie up, plaits, bun.
Bobs have to styled to look as they should and short hair has more upkeep.

Clearinguptheclutter · 18/02/2024 20:45

Short bobs are very difficult. You have to go very short to ease the styling time I think. Mine is a longish bob which I can either style or tie up and not worry about

2chocolateoranges · 18/02/2024 20:46

My hair goes between a chin length bob and a shoulder length bob, depending on how I feel of the day of my hairdressers appointment.

i don’t find either length difficult to manage however would love to wake up some mornings and just tie my hair back and go to work .

Alphabet1spaghetti2 · 18/02/2024 20:48

Short needs regular maintenance. Also looks shit very quickly if you don’t do the maintenance cuts. D unless very short will need some styling. Quick to wash and dry.
mid length is very versatile and forgiving over maintenance cuts. Can be left loose or tied up, highly styled or loosely styled. Quick to wash and dry. Easy with curly hair.
long length can be heavy when up and take a long time to wash and dry. Imo can look dirty and unkept quite quickly if you have dry ends and oily scalp like me.
so I went with versatile mid length. And I like all the cute clips and grips etc.

Springisintheair01 · 18/02/2024 22:23

Yes I agree that short and a very short bob can be difficult to style with more sticky up bits than long.

I have wavy/curly hair and in my case short is by far the easiest to manage. I get it cut every 8 weeks, other than that I wash and condition it once a week - that's it. Even though my hair was technically short beforehand it's so liberating to have it really short - and I'm going to tell my hairdresser that if I ever say I want to grow it longer he is to ignore me and cut it the way it is now!

DJSteves · 19/02/2024 06:52

I used to have a short graduated bob that needed styling every day and regular maintenance. I loved it and had lots of complements. My friend was my hairdresser so keeping on top of it wasn't an issue. I've moved countries since and don't have a regular hairdresser here so have grown it to shoulder length and have had choppy highlights put in so I can go longer between restyles. I wear it up more and it's much easier to manage in the heat. I do miss my bob though!

Floisme · 19/02/2024 07:11

I've got similar hair to you by the sound of it op, and I've never managed to grow it beyond my shoulders before losing patience because it gets so unruly.

It's now just above jaw length with lots of layers. I get it cut every 6 or 7 weeks and I'm between I just wash it, mess it up a bit and go.

I'm not sure how much of it is about length and how much it's about finding a style - one that works with your hair and doesn't involve trying to fight it into submission.

bumtrumpet · 19/02/2024 07:16

I have thick, fairly wavy hair. I find it much easier to manage long as the weight helps pull it down. Shoulder length I find it sits strange and flicks out all over. Above should length then it gets a life if it's own and needs styling every single day. Longer is easier for me as it's more versatile.

Gottoloveatakeaway · 19/02/2024 07:31

I've got the thick not straight nor curly hair type. Currently have a short choppy layered bob. Mostly I scrunch in mousse and leave to air dry and it looks pretty good. I occasionally blow dry smooth if I feel like it.

Agree with this. I have found that mine needs to be at least collarbone length to be well behaved and low maintenance. It also needs long layers to avoid triangle head, blunt cuts are disasterous on me.

Springisintheair01 · 19/02/2024 13:04

I can’t see me styling it every day so maybe I will stick with shoulder length for now!

Definitely my hair is better when long enough to put up, the weight helps to control it.
I have a hot brush and it makes such a difference to my hair in between washes, I usually wash and blow dry my hair on a Monday and Friday and then I the Progloss ceramic hot brush to smooth and style it every morning, takes 5 minutes.

I have a bob now, I used to have long hair, I could tie a ponytail at any time. now I have to do minimal styling, but I wash it in the morning and use sticky curlers. my hair is thin, so it's easy to style. And in general, I think, in any case, short or long hair, but the minimum effort to look good, you need to do.
