I LOVE this jacket but I'm not sure I can afford it

Hi everyone,

I have fallen for a jacket that I saw in a local boutique but it's more than I would normally ever spend on clothes. I have a few milestone birthdays coming up in Spring and it has caught my eye. I know it's not everyones taste but what do you think? Also, has anyone seen any cheaper alternatives? It's not exactly a versatile piece of clothing so would rather spend less!

It’s not my style but if it will make you happy why not.

I tend to go by the rule that I take £5 off each time I wear something. If I am going to wear it enough to make my money back it’s a good choice. If I don’t it’s a waste.

LemmysBullet · 18/02/2024 18:08

It's sold out, maybe it's not meant to be.

PossumintheHouse · 18/02/2024 18:13

I think the price is fine you’ll get a lot of use out of it. Personally not my style as reminds me of towelling/the Cookie Monster, plus I bet random fluffy bits cling to it like there’s no tomorrow. If you like it, go for it.

itsmyp4rty · 18/02/2024 18:17

It's quite fun and I can see why you like it - but I think you'd have to be very young and look like a model to get away with it. It's not going to look good on an over weight pasty middle aged woman (so that's me out). I think also it might be one of those things I bought when i was young because I loved it but then later regretted and it ended up just sitting in my wardrobe because it was so impractical.

LookItsMeAgain · 18/02/2024 18:36

Try and work out the 'price per wear'. If you will only wear it to a few things and then think "I'll pop that in my wardrobe never to be seen again" it'll work out very expensive. However, if you can wear it to church every Sunday or to do the shopping every Thursday evening for example, it'll pay for itself in no time.

hby9628 · 18/02/2024 18:37

Is there anything similar on Vinted?

GalileoHumpkins · 18/02/2024 22:11

I think it's a wear it once kind of item tbh, it kind of reminds me of a shower pouf.

Ariona · 18/02/2024 22:53

I honestly think it looks cheap and SHEIN.

IHaveNeverLivedintheCastle · 19/02/2024 00:09

I think it's a jacket you'd get a lot of wear out of.

Wordless · 19/02/2024 06:34

Why do people do this?

Why?

Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why? Why?

£160 for 100% polyester!

It's sold out, maybe it's not meant to be.

Hmm

On my screen it’s currently sold out in the XS and the M+. The other sizes are still available though some are low in stock.

MadameBrigitte · 19/02/2024 06:46

It reminds me of hand knitted pompom cardigans we had as kids in the late 70s, early 80s.
Its quite distinctive so people would remember you wearing it if you're planning to wear it to different events.

If you like it, go for it!

Happyinarcon · 19/02/2024 06:51

I think some people would be able to get a lot of wear out of this jacket and incorporate it into both a casual and elevated look, however you need to ask yourself if you are one of those people.

Enko · 19/02/2024 07:04

I went to Bath with a close friend and she got one very similar in bright Orange. She said it made her feel happy.

It looked lovely on her though she after told me she called it her sesame Street coat. (She used it a lot we lost her last year and the coat was mentioned in her ulogy)

Hummusandstuff · 19/02/2024 07:11

Price seems OK for what is quite a special piece. It s fun and it would bring you joy so go for it.

Quitelikeacatslife · 19/02/2024 07:25

It's quite a lot of money for a fun piece. It's cute but if that's a lot for you then you might be better getting something with more longevity as a special gift.
It's fun but very distinctive too so will you wear it lots of times?

Wordless · 19/02/2024 07:52

What does in a local boutique mean, @ChimneySweepLiverpool? As you’ve linked the website I’m guessing you’re not limited to an actual physical shop? Have you looked at the rest of the site? While I always enjoy the Sister Jane look, I don’t think this is the best thing they currently have.

And as the owner of a Big Puffy Pale Blue Jacket (from a very different brand) I have to say it’s a bit of a nuisance. Mine is very warm but doesn’t really work with most of my Winter clothes. And is far too heavy for Spring. The Sister Jane jacket presumably won’t be too warm - as 100% polyester. (Might possibly be a bit sweaty, though.) But will it work with the rest of your wardrobe?

My main reservation would be that it does look quite cheap. Combination of fabric and construction. If it’s the colour you love, they have other things in pale blue, with ruffles. Have a look at the shirts / blouses, some of which contain a smidgen of a natural fibre and might perform the same function for much less money.

But if you really want a jacket, given that it’s more than you’d usually spend I’d suggest looking for something of better quality, or holding out until this is at a sale price.

I so dislike this sort of negativity. It's not exactly the same but I have this Baum und Pferdgarten jacket in navy brocade (in polyester) and black cotton jacquard (in cotton) I get lots of wear from them. The sleeves, like the Sister Jane one, are not fitted so they easily go over dresses with full sleeves.

CharlotteRumpling · 19/02/2024 09:40

I am afraid it gives me Cookie Monster too, but if you like it, buy it! I don't believe in dressing for age, anyway.

I really like that Baum und Pferdgarten jacket, even in the pink.

ChimneySweepLiverpool · 19/02/2024 10:25

Thank you all. I'm not sure I will actually buy it, I think I just got carried away. My local shop has it in every size so it might go to a sale price in future

DisforDarkChocolate · 19/02/2024 10:27

It's not for me but I like be it too. Some of your clothes should be WTF but I'm buying it anyway.

ICantbelieveitMeldrew · 19/02/2024 10:27

I think that look is very easily copied and you will find versions of it on all the cheap sites like Shein.

Wordless · 19/02/2024 12:16

I think I just got carried away.

Nothing wrong with getting carried away, @ChimneySweepLiverpool.

If I fall in love with something I’m absolutely uninterested in anyone else’s opinion. But I do think you could find better, or cheaper.

HarrogateHouseSale · 19/02/2024 12:23

I have seen it in real life. I love the style of Sister Jane but the fabrics are shockingly cheap which really ruin them for me. This one is the same- the fabric isn't just polyester but a really cheap kind
Frustrates me that if they spent a few quid more on fabric then the clothes would be so much better.
