Wedding guest outfit, short and fat!

We have been invited to a wedding and I am looking for a red dress. I am 5’3, about size 14-16, large bust, tummy not what it used to be but legs still quite good. I would prefer that the tops of my arms are covered and that the dress is not full length.

I would greatly appreciate some Mumsnet wisdom! I am not very good at this sort of thing and haven’t been to a wedding for ages. Thank you!

Try scarlet and Jo?

Personally, I think the Pretty Kitty dress that @Cantthinkofadifferentname posted about is a classic cut and would look lovely.

RoseMarigoldViolet · 16/03/2024 17:21

Thank you for the suggestions and sorry for the very slow response (stuff going on). The Pretty Kitty dress is nice but I think it would be too long on me. I am short so need a Petite size or a Regular dress that is quite short so would be longer on me. It is hard to find things for short fat people!

Not sure if red is a flattering colour

no sure if red is a flattering colour

I'm following with interest as I'm in similar position.
5' 2" size 16 , good legs , big stomach.
It's got to be petite or a mini dress I think.

Thank you. That is definitely an option! I have been searching for a few weeks on and off and hadn’t seen that. It’s interesting how some dresses pop up all the time.

Parkxyz - fair point about whether red is flattering for the body. But it is good for my colouring and my husband is going to wear his kilt and the tartan is red. The last wedding we went to (a few years ago) I did my own thing and I look at the photos and wish I’d worn red.

You know how there’s that shop Long Tall Sally for talI people’s clothes, I often think there would be a big market for a short and fat shop! Hobbits and Friends, Gnomes Dress Up, or Petite and Gorgeous! (that last one’s pushing it on a Sunday morning!)

I'm 5ft 1 and the length was fine

That Rooibos dress is lovely and looks good no matter what your size.

RoseMarigoldViolet · 17/03/2024 12:01

That Rooibos dress IS lovely and a bit more lively than the more traditional ‘wedding-ish’ outfits that I have been looking at. I haven’t seen Zuri dresses before and just had a browse on their website. Very nice and a bit different. And these dresses would be comfortable, no need to think about the M&S control pants!

Perhaps I need to go more ‘out there’ with my choice?!

I think so, and you'd get quite a lot of wear out of it in general I would think. I have a dress in a similar style that is really useful in the summer. You could have some fun with the accessories, too.

martellotower · 17/03/2024 16:22

It was @CommeIlFaut who mentioned the lovely Zuri dresses.

Does it have to be red? I think this dress in red looks rather cheap, I am afraid, but in the navy/ white pattern it's chic.
