Amateur make up artist...too risky...?

Hi, I have a friend's Indian wedding to go to in the summer and there will be multiple events...Im not great with applying makeup and I cant afford to go to a professional MUA for all the events.

Do you think its risky to look out for an amateur person who is great at makeup, can put on eyelashes etc...I see so many ladies who do their makeup flawlessly but are not MUA's...is this too cheeky. Of course I will pay them but Im hoping it will be cheaper than a Pro...

Has anyone else done this?

What does her portfolio look like?

If she has social media, check the tagged photos or comments of the photos to see the profiles of the people she’s done makeup for. Then message that person asking what they thought of their makeup.

Experienced doesn’t always mean better. I found this when looking for my wedding makeup artist.

I had an amateur mua do my wedding make up. I couldn’t afford a more expensive one.
I had a trial with her, loved the make up style and liked that it lasted all day so booked her later.
She had a very small social media following and was only something she did for fun at weekends but I was happy with the outcome.
Id suggest you could try a trial first and see what you think before fully committing.

I'm a trained make up artist but haven't worked in the industry for over 15 years. Most of the amateur/self taught make up artists can do better make up than me!
All I'd say is that they often have a particular style that they stick to so not much variety.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Im going to brave doing my own hair and makeup! There are now 2 close weddings this summer-its crazy when the hair and makeup costs more than my outfit!
