It's official, older people smell different- from age 40 upwards!

Article in today's Times details how people over 40 smell different due to the presence of a chemical called 2-nonenal. The older you get the more you smell of this chemical.

Seemingly eating mushrooms can keep this smell at bay.

OMFG. I am 56. A daily mushroom it is then.

I was telling my daughter about the old people smell some time back, she thinks it's hilarious and totally bonkers.
She's worked between operating theatres and A&E for twenty years so has smelt a few bodies in that time.

I do have a theory if there's such a thing, but more to do with washing habits than age.
Some elderly people tend to strip wash rather than shower. That misses out the back but particularly lower neck area that gets greasy.
They might not wash/dry-clean jackets and coats as often as they should either, so collecting that greasy odour.

It gave us a good laugh anyway and now everything is, or not nonni.
She even messaged her friend in Japan who'd never heard of it.

Meanwhile, I'll keep showering and moisturising with Citron, no nonni can survive that, it perfumes the whole house.
Eating persimmon too, not for nonni sake, I've been eating them for so long they used to be called Sharon fruit. Always keep them until the flesh is jelly like.

Persimmon soap at £15 a bar! Follow the money.

It’s not washing habits, it’s not a dirty smell. It’s an actual biological thing.

DH and I are in our mid 50’s and our parents in their early 80’s. We all shower at least once a day and none of us smell anything other than clean.

@PiggyPigalle
Who or what is Nonni?!
