smart casual AND practical outfit for professional events & conferences

i need to update my conference wardrobe.

At the moment, i have / wear

  • black skinny trousers
  • bouse tops
  • black or navy jersey jacket

shoes are either suede highish heel boots or converse hi-top

i don t like wearing dresses, and i cannot wear stilettos or sandals (weather does not allow, plus i walk to the train and back). i d rather be in ballet flats or trainers.

I was interested in the wide leg trousers trend, but i am short (5'2) and slimmish (size 10-12) but a bit untoned. Not sure what i would wear with it that would not make me look like a rectangle (it s cold here all year round, i d never wear short sleeves or no jacket/cardi/jumper, for example)

where should i start?

It is January. No one is going to suggest sandals or short sleeves - so it’s a bit discombobulating to read your refusal to wear them.

When you ask where you should start - I’m not clear whether you mean specific items of clothing or possible brands to try.

i guess i m planning an all year round wardrobe, not a seasonal one.

BTW, it s not refusal per se, btw, i live in one of the wettest spot in Europe.

as where to start - pretty much this. I m looking into a new work wardrobe with wide legged trousers, but my body shape might make it a silly choice, and i would like it to look smart, but also be practical. If i had any deep insight on the topic, i don t think i d be posting on here.
