Advice needed: damaged hair with Go Blonder

Advice sought please from a first time poster - I figured you ladies would know.

I've played with box dyes on my light brown hair for years, going blondish/reddish with nice results. I use a darker colour on my grey roots as they tend to stick better.

The other day, I tried John Freida's Go Blonder shampoo and spray. Bad move. My hair lightened, but to a nasty brassy shade. I tried a purple hair mask a few times, but the colour still wasn't nice.

I looked on YouTube and it seemed that going over the colour with a semi permanent ash shade might work. And while it worked a treat colour-wise, my hair has frizzed snapped all over the top and is about 50% finer than it was before. I'm gutted.

Wish I'd googled it sooner, but it seems that you don't mix Go Blonder with box dyes and hairdressers won't touch you if you've used this product. Ho hum.

So here's my question now: I plan to just leave my hair alone for the most part, other than deep conditioner treatments and try to let it grow out, but what should I do about my roots when they need touching up? I'll use a temporary covering product for as many weeks as I can get away with, but when they need doing properly... is it going to be risky to add another chemical product, even if I try to keep it to the regrowth only?

Thanks all.
