Roka Lucky Dip - I just don’t get the hype.

Don’t get me wrong, Roka bags are fab. I’ve had one for a year and a half, it’s been used virtually every day and washed several times. I do truly love it.

But I just don’t understand the hype around the lucky dip. When I fought mine, I spent ages choosing a style and practical colour which would go with everything. I then bought it for less (new) on eBay.

Even if I hadn’t got a good deal, I’d rather spend a bit more to get the bag and colour that I actually want.

And I only need one - or do I?

I don't get it at all; backpacks in garish colours? No thanks.

FuckityFuckBollocks · 25/01/2024 09:48

Yep I definitely prefer to have one plainer one that goes with everything.

The lucky dip is just clever marketing to get rid of all the unwanted garish coloures I suppose.

Yep, solid marketing genius to have people blindly drop significant amounts of money on their old tat that they can't easily sell.

isthismylifenow · 25/01/2024 19:28

Each to their own really.

I think the price point was good enough for people to want to try their luck to get something they liked.

Sarvanga38 · 25/01/2024 19:29

It certainly is genius marketing - I bet Roka can’t believe their luck.

pictoosh · 25/01/2024 19:34

I saw this and it put me off ever spending a penny on a Roka bag. So obviously wanting rid of the unpopular colours. Lucky dip...they must think we're thick as mince.
Maybe some of us are. I don't know if it has been a success or not. I know I thought 'aye right'.

FuckityFuckBollocks · 25/01/2024 20:24

Why not just have a normal sale? That way everyone can just get what they really want. There are tons on unwanted ones on vinted now for £40 plus.

Yep it’s totally put me off them too. I can’t believe so many people have fallen for it. I’m sure they even mention swapping on mumsnet on their website. There seems to have been three swapping threads already. 😯

KissTheRains · 25/01/2024 20:38

Didn't they flog off a load of hats this year too?

And the little line about no returns was enough to put me off.

JodieFostersFurHood · 25/01/2024 21:12

Look I am sure that there are people who are very happy with it, like the style etc and may well not like some of the shite you buy. Why do you need to make a thread suggesting that people have fallen for it/blindly dropping money /old tat/thick as mince, you sad, sad people.

Lovemusic82 · 25/01/2024 21:13

I did the lucky dip last year and got a bag that I would never use (pastel colour) so sold it in vinted for what I paid. I guess st a good deal if your not fussy about colours but I would rather buy a bag at full price that I know I’m going to use every day.

But the 'blind' part is literally just a fact.

But surely you’d agree they should just put them in the sale at the lucky dip prices and then people can actually get what they want. Some of the bright colours are lovely but they need to suit their owner.

Lucky dip doesn’t equal fun and excitement to me, just frustration.

That is just you though. Many people clearly don't feel the same way.

I don't understand why you started a thread encouraging people to slate a brand, which you admit you current use and enjoy.

pictoosh · 26/01/2024 05:21

Perhaps, like me, she was annoyed by the overt arrogance of the marketing.
Just because they tell you they're aspirational, it doesn't mean they are.

"You want one of our bags so much you'll pay for and accept one in a duff colour."

I won't thanks. There are other bags.

SuperSange · 26/01/2024 05:46

Are the bags good quality? I'm in the market for a new backpack and do like the look of them.

Yes, it's the smuggery for me.

Want to pay us £50 for what looks like a child's school bag in a colour that nobody else wanted? Pay up now and we'll see what we've got left lying around the warehouse floor. Oh, hang on, lemme just shift the bin there - yay, a sample that we asked the trainee to make in Eyeburn Vivid Hellscape Orange is lying right there. Wipe the mouse shit off and it'll be fine.

hattie43 · 26/01/2024 06:00

I admit I did the lucky dip . First time ever for me and I got a large pale grey backpack . I love it and it will be going to Japan with me shortly .
Each to their own I guess .

JuJuHeyHey · 26/01/2024 06:17

I did it last year and got my ideal backpack for less than half what I would have paid full price.

This year I got my ideal smaller bag in a colour I liked but didn't love and managed to swap it for my favourite colour with someone on the thread. Again, paid less than half of full price.

So I love it!

MyNamechange2024 · 26/01/2024 07:20

I got one last year and two this year. Happy with all of them, fabulous quality. As I like their products I knew I had a good chance of getting something I liked plus a little bit of excitement at not knowing what. Baaah humbug ;).

Notbridezilla · 28/01/2024 22:43

I’ve just ordered from the lucky dip for the first time because it was good value and I’m happy to be surprised a little bit!

bringincrazyback · 29/01/2024 21:02

Thing is, one person's 'unwanted' or 'garish' colour or style might be exactly to someone else's taste. I've done several lucky dips. A couple of items haven't been to my taste and I've swapped or sold them, others have been spot on. Admittedly I tend to like colours and styles a lot of other people don't 😄but the lucky dip threads have so many satisfied customers that I think it's quite negative to suggest the lucky dip is a cynical ploy to get rid of crap.

However, I do agree it was a bit naughty of them this year to not be clearer that some of the items weren't bags. Hopefully they have adjusted/will adjust their marketing accordingly.

confusedbythesystem · 02/02/2024 17:40

I did try it for the first time this year just because I came across it on Mumsnet. I'm a bit cynical that ROKA suggest MN as the place to swap unwanted bags. It's a marketing ploy as they know a lot of new buyers will, see the activity and be drawn in (like me!).

I received a nice bag In a non-garish colour but am now less than keen to use it. I feel it marks me out as a MN stereo-type!

WhenWereYouUnderMe · 02/02/2024 18:12

That's a good point! Like the MN scarf!

Aydel · 02/02/2024 18:14

I got a fab bag in a great colour and it cost me less than half price.

Pigtailsandall · 02/02/2024 19:09

Isn't it a bit sad to start a thread on something like this? Loads of places market stuff in ways I don't particularly like, and if you think it's a very obvious ploy then...don't buy one.

I was on the market for a new backpack for days out/taking dc swimming etc and I didn't much care which colour it came in, as long as it was sturdy and well-made. I got a purple one, but would have been equally fine with green, yellow, blue or whatever. I'd rather save some £££ thfn be v picky about colour
