Vinted dress off sizing wwyd

I think I already know the answer is suck it up and learn from my mistakes.... But just curious as to what others would do?

In brief, I bought a dress on vinted BNWT which says size 16 on the label but which measures very far from that. Advertised on vinted as a 16, which is also what the label says. Not a vintage label or one known for being tiny.

The material is completely non stretch and the waist measures 32 inches. In order to get the dress on, the waist has to go over head and chest. There's a little side zip which adds another 3 inches max. In what world is a size 16 ever going to get something of 35 inches over their chest?

I'm just a bit miffed because I always take the care to put measurements and advise on fit if I think sizing is out. Double miffed because I sized up to accommodate for my chest. The waist may well be fine for me but I'll never know because trying it on would necessitate the fire brigade for taking it off.

Would you take it up with seller? Or suck it up because I should have asked for measurements? (Not that anyone's ever replied when I've done that).

Is it possibly age 16 rather than size 16?

That happened to me once, bought a size 12 advertised dress, it fitted my 11 year old. We concluded that it was age 12 and the seller was a bit dim.

PieAndLattes · 24/01/2024 19:17

Is it an American size 16? That’s a 12 in UK sizing.

sunshinesupermum · 24/01/2024 19:19

Did the photo on Vinted show the size label? If it did you won't get anywhere with the seller although I agree with you and she should have mentioned it was a small 16 and more likely to fit a 12 - 14 judging by the measurements! Sadly you'll just have to resell. Commiserations.

BuntyCollocks · 24/01/2024 19:20

Wrong way round - a us 12 is a uk 16

PrimaniTu · 24/01/2024 19:21

You have to be so careful with sizing on Vinted. I'm after a specific DvF dress, I own one but want it in a bigger size. It has American sizing but the amount of dresses advertised as a size 8 when they are a size 12 is phenomenal.

I can only assume they've never worn the item or are selling it on behalf of someone else.

Sorry you've experienced this. I don't know what to suggest suck it up or challenge it. Was it expensive?

If the size on the label is a 16 and the seller has stated that, then there’s nothing you can do.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 24/01/2024 19:23

if its label says a 16 then the seller has done nothing wrong and you won't get anywhere.

I'd probably resell on Vinted selling it as a 10 but pointing out the label says 16. And give measurements

purplecorkheart · 24/01/2024 19:28

If the label says 16 then I cannot see what the seller did wrong. Sizes vary between brands and even within brands. There is no standard size 16 unfortunately when it comes to buying clothes. Most brand list their size guides on their sites so best to check with those before purchase

Precipice · 24/01/2024 19:33

If it's what the label says, Vinted won't do anything. Vinted policies are that the seller should list the label, not their own perception. It doesn't satisfy the 'item not as described' which is the only return reason Vinted accepts.

I agree that the seller should explain in the listing (says L, fits S well), but the real crux is that sellers should list measurements. Unfortunately, many don't.

swingtowin · 24/01/2024 19:36

If it's an older garment then size 16 is probably our size 12 today - I have a few bits of my mums who was always a 16 when I was little but they aren't massively ample on me and I'm a 12 now..

lizzoouuu · 24/01/2024 19:41

32 inch waist is a uk16 measurement.

sunshinesupermum · 24/01/2024 19:45

32 " waist goes nowhere near me and I'm a size 16 in dresses. Any skirts or bottoms need to have some elastic for them to fit!

brilliantskinaustralia · 24/01/2024 19:50

I prefer to peruse the clothes then buy them. I have bought from the store twice without wearing clothes and I had problems both times.

Thinkbiglittleone · 24/01/2024 19:51

I think in the sellers defence, she has just sold the dress as it is labelled.

Revelwithacause · 24/01/2024 19:56

I would re-sell I think. Maybe the seller didn’t know how big or small it was. They could be selling on charity shop finds.

as a general rule on Vinted I don’t buy anything that won’t easily re-sell unless it’s very cheap and I can suck up the loss. You get to know what will sell quite easily- look at the number of likes it has and check that its hasn’t been on sale for a long time.

ManchesterBea · 24/01/2024 19:58

32 inch waist is huge so feels like it might be a 16?

I don't think a 32 inch waist is huge.... ?! 😳

DressProblem · 24/01/2024 20:13

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm inclined to agree that all I can do is resell.

I wish vinted made measurements mandatory though! They're so easy to do.

This. I tend to buy brands I know on Vinted because I'm familiar with how they fit.

Perhaps safer to size up in future as you can get it taken in if need be.

DressProblem · 24/01/2024 20:19

In case I wasn't clear, although I'm fairly sure the 32 inch waist isn't a size 16 currently, it's the fact that to even get the thing on (never mind doing the zip up) the wearer would need a 35 inch chest! That's roughly a bra size 34a / 32c / 30dd, none of which seem very size 16 to me!

I have tonnes already from the same label, sizes 12 to 16. I've never thought of them as unusually small. Just checked their size chart - they state a 35 inch chest is a size 10.

Perhaps although it's got the tags on its actually quite old.

If it says 16 on the label then I don't think it's really the sellers fault. It's the risk you take with Vinted. Seller might not have tried it on, but agree that if she knew then she should have said something along the lines of 'comes up small'.

Happened to me once with a pair of boden slippers, they were way too narrow and it was clearly a design fault because after I purchased them I noticed that loads of people were selling them, presumably because they don't fit the average foot. I sold them on (for a healthy profit Wink) stating that they came up very narrow and my buyer was happy with them.

As a Vinted seller I must say I'd never be bothered to get the tape measure out....

Lastarse · 24/01/2024 21:07

In the summer I got a size 16 Jigsaw dress off Vinted - it is exactly the same pattern, colour and size as one I already own and it’s definitely a 12 although labelled a 16. Only thing I can think is that the seller put it in a hot dryer,
anyway, had to chalk it down to bad luck as there was really nothing I could do re vinted as it’s definitely labelled a 16 :(

Flossflower · 24/01/2024 21:52

I am a size 10. Years ago this was a 14.

No it isn't.

A US size 16 would be a UK 18. A UK 16 would be a US 14
