Canaries holiday- outfit ideas for evening

hellswelshy · 14/01/2024 11:21

This is very frivolous but I'm going away early February to Gran Canaria, did the same last year and found whilst the days were very warm, the evenings were chilly. I'm struggling for some reason beyond a cardigan, to think of some ideas how to look a little bit glamorous but warm in the evenings when going out to dinner. It's a pretty smart hotel and I'm not really 😃Any ideas/inspiration or actual items that may work?

Blazers?

hellswelshy · 14/01/2024 11:25

Thanks for the reply. I do wear a blazer for work, but it's black and so can't imagine a blazer tha would work with more 'holiday' type clothing iyswim? So want to look smart but not business like. Any suggestions for any that don't look too worky?

thickish shawl? obviously something dressy rather than an old blanket type

ineedanewnametoday · 14/01/2024 11:39

I've just come back from a winter sun holiday and wore this relaxed fit/slouchy black blazer over a midi dress or jeans and a cami top in the evenings.

You could get a different colour blazer instead that would go with the colour of dresses/skirts you have.

I also have this long camel coloured cardigan from Next which looks really nice over white jeans/trousers and a white top (doesn't work with dresses/skirts though because of the length)

Shawl or pashmina, thin but warm.
Shrug or bolero - you can get these in many styles from knitted to jacket in a range of colours.

hellswelshy · 14/01/2024 11:47

Oh thanks for the replies! Yes wondered about an oversized scarf maybe. Saw a nice one in Seasalt on sale. ineedanewnametoday thank you - both links were for the cardigan, could you repost the blazer please?

Pashmina/wraps of some kind? That's what I did in Tenerife recently. Also I did find wearing trainers (and socks) helped keep me warmer as I struggle with cold feet otherwise.

theresnolimits · 14/01/2024 12:00

This is me when we go and (bar Covid) we have been every year in the winter for the last 10 years.

I take my denim jacket - easy to throw on over anything. I also take a thin navy sweater and a short dark sweatshirt to pop over clothes as it cools off.

I don’t take skirts/dresses but various length trousers keep my legs warm. All my ‘evening outfits’ are long sleeved.

I know it’s me but I think pashminas/shrugs are quite aging (sorry). Also don’t suit someone generous of bust like me.

We stay in quite an upmarket resort/hotel but it’s very casual in the evenings because the majority of the clientele are German/Scandi and they generally have a more casual dress vibe than the Brits.

hellswelshy · 14/01/2024 12:08

Thanks all. Yes agree re pashminas, I like them but can look a bit dated. The oversized scarf I found - will try to link - was a bit more modern I think? Long sleeves - yes - may find some pop over blouses that work. And yes agree about cold feet, but again what works if trying to look a bit elegant? And modern!

On a Tenerife January holiday I found myself wearing long sleeves tops, jumpers and trousers with trainers. I was so cold!

A warmish jumpsuit with a warm cardigan is another option

If you are really anti trainer then any closed toe shoe e.g. some pointy flats in a metallic colour.

I think trainers are your best option for ‘modern’. For elegant, I have in the past worn my smart black boots (flat, ankle) on the plane and, as I only wear trousers, I find they style up a nice pair of black trousers.

The Canaries in winter are so different from the Med in the summer I find in terms of wardrobe.

hellswelshy · 14/01/2024 12:22

Thank you TigerJoy it's not so much I'm anti trainer I'm just not sure what trainer would work? I'm probably overthinking!

OP posts:
hellswelshy · 14/01/2024 12:26

Yes definitely different to summer evenings in the med, I agree theresnolimits I remember thinking it was more like spring at night despite the temperatures in the day being around 25. I need to approach it like spring I suppose! Any trainer suggestions are welcome 🙏

I wear a white long sleeved linen/cotton shirt, generally with the sleeves rolled up. Goes nicely over the top of most outfits.
Also have a medium weight pastel coloured jersey bomber jacket (pale turquoise which coordinates with just about everything I own) if it's a bit chillier.
Also have neutral Skechers lace ballet flats if it's too cold for sandals.

ThePoshUns · 14/01/2024 12:30

Denim jacket ? ( I'm going to Lanzarote in Feb!)

bobomomo · 14/01/2024 12:32

@hellswelshy

I found most women were in white trainers, I don't think wraps are aging if you get them in colours that suit you. I have a denim jacket too. It's pretty casual I find there so dressing up beyond a nice dress and trainers would look a bit out of place.

bobomomo · 14/01/2024 12:34

I have adidas white trainers, not fancy just from sports direct for £30 but they do the trick

Yes! The temp drops right down in the evening. Most people have fleeces on or those terrible shell suit jackets (the Germans!).

We’ve just come back from Lanzarote and a light cardigan or an outfit with long sleeves like a jumpsuit was fine for the evenings. I did wear jeans or cropped trousers in the evening. I also brought my denim jacket, which would have been a good level of coverage for later in the evening.

If you’re an early riser, a hoody/jumper for breakfast time will also be essential.

The weather was perfect in my opinion - hot enough to sunbathe and swim in the sea but without it being too hot. Then nice and cool over night so that you could enjoy sleeping and the fresh mornings were lovely.

hellswelshy · 14/01/2024 13:39

Thank you all! I am warming to the trainer idea, possibly something I would wear in spring afterwards too. I may explore white Converse or Adidas or Nikes. I've ordered the Seasalt scarf, will take my denim jacket and may find a camel cardigan or light jumper.

I have this that I am taking to the Canaries next week. Lovely and cosy for the plane and the chilly evenings. Plus the horrible journey home !

Do you mean for within the hotel or for walking / sitting outside ? Clothing I wear in the evening in southern Spain in the winter are jeans and low ankle boots with a nice shirt, long sleeve batwing top or a thin merino jumper . Similar to what I would wear in the UK. A light puffer jacket for outside or a warmer jumper under the jacket if sitting outside .

I think your temperatures will be a few degrees warmer though .
