Fake blonde: how often do you get roots done?

Currently going 4 times a year which means I am very rooty in the last month, this seemed fine a couple of years ago, on trend even, but starting to feel unkempt! How often do you get your roots done if you go from brunette to blonde? I was considering going brunette but took me so long to get to blonde and I really like it so not ready yet I don't think!

I alternate between a full head of foils and getting my parting done every 12-14 weeks

qpalbfy · 27/12/2023 19:54

Sorry to sound daft, what does it mean to just get your parting done? Just the top? Is that what they call a half head?

I go every 4-5 weeks (to hide the grey)

Same as you! My hairdresser said it’s ideal for hair health and I just go along with whatever she tells me to do tbh. I’ve been in the salon at the same time as she’s had clients with 6-8 week roots wanting them to be redone and she’s given a hard no.

I last had my roots done start of October so I am now in rooty territory.

I find a good purple shampoo makes it look fresher for longer even with roots, makes it look more ‘purposeful’ 😂.

I’m naturally quite dark and have been blonde for 20 years now. I go each 6 weeks to the salon, alternating between a full head then half head. I do get roots but nothing too bad in the 6 weeks

Every 5 weeks to hide grey. Every 4 weeks would be too frequently but by the middle of 5th week that's no doubt it needs doing.

MissAtomicBomb1 · 27/12/2023 21:47

Every 6 weeks for root retouch - I'm a natural brunette though going grey.
The lengths of my hair are blonde with highlights/balyage but I have a root smudge I think it's called which is somewhere between my natural colour & the blonde.
I then have foils every 6 months to blend it all in.
I found having an all over blonde colour was ageing me and was too hard to maintain as I'd have dark roots after a fortnight.

Orangeslemon · 27/12/2023 23:33

Do you have highlights or all over colour? I get blonde highlights every 3 months but I’ve been considering going back to brunette as well (haven’t been my natural colour since my early teens so not even sure what I’d look like!) Last time I had just one blonde shade and two darker shades so my roots don’t look as stark when they grow in. I’ve got away with going only 3 times a year when I’ve done this in the past.

LizzieFromTheForest · 27/12/2023 23:34

Every 6-7 weeks.

Biscuithelp · 27/12/2023 23:34

I get a half head every five weeks

headache · 27/12/2023 23:40

Every 5-6 weeks upkeep not for the faint hearted. Was hoping to be more greyish by now

Watchthedoormat · 27/12/2023 23:44

Every 8 weeks alternating half head and full head.

minipie · 27/12/2023 23:48

Every 12 weeks ish. The root smudge sounds interesting though.

JinglePringle · 27/12/2023 23:49

Brunette friend is white blonde and has been for 20+ years. She has so little hair left you can see a lot of her scalp and the hair that is left is dry and brittle.

So I would advise not bleaching every 6 weeks like she does. Every 8-10 weeks would be my ideal I think.

Moveoverdarlin · 27/12/2023 23:50

Every ten weeks

whiteshutters · 27/12/2023 23:50

Half head every 8 weeks.

43ontherocksporfavor · 27/12/2023 23:52

Every 8 weeks for foils of 3 shades . High lift rather than full on bleach. I only have a half head as I have a long bob. I’d go further apart but now 52 and have some greys.

Peoplemakemedespair · 27/12/2023 23:57

For people saying they get a half head, is there much a difference in the time/price for you? 4ish years ago it used to be half the price of a whole head for me so was worth doing if I can get away with it. But the price where I am has crept up to the point I’m now only paying £15 less and it’s still taking 3h 10m instead of 3 and a half hours. I always just pay the extra few quid for a whole head now

43ontherocksporfavor · 27/12/2023 23:57

Half head and cut and finish is £86 and takes 2 hrs.

user1471548941 · 28/12/2023 00:03

Full head every 6 weeks, but my hairdresser advises that my hair is in very good condition and takes it well. She assures me would stop me if my hair wasn’t healthy. Hair is white blonde, have been for over 10 years and get many compliments in the shine and condition of my hair.

toomanyleggings · 28/12/2023 00:03

I get a root smudge done every 8 weeks and the blonde highlights done every 3/ 4 months. I have a lot of grey coming through so I touch the root smudge up myself at around 4/5 weeks which is fairly easy to do

43ontherocksporfavor · 28/12/2023 00:14

Wondering why my hairdresser has never suggested a root smudge.

BungleandGeorge · 28/12/2023 00:15

what sort of colour do you have? I don’t understand how highlights can make you pale blonde from brunette- surely some of the hair is still brunette if you have highlights? If it’s all blonde isn’t it a block colour and they can just colour the roots every few weeks which is less damaging because they’re not re-bleaching the lengths?

43ontherocksporfavor · 28/12/2023 00:20

I’m now naturally brunette with a fair few greys along my hairline and parting but hardly any at the back( hence half head) so I have 3 colours- a warm brown, a warm caramel blond and a high lift blonde in foils every 8 weeks.

Torchdino · 28/12/2023 07:26

I used to go every 6 weeks, such a time and monetary commitment but I did love it! Let it grow out over lockdown and just back brunette now.
