Shien versus Uniqlo?

TurquoiseTurtoise · 24/12/2023 09:27

Saw Uniqlo being compared to Shien as a fast fashion brand, am I missing something? Or the person in the video never really shopped at Uniqlo?

I don’t know how suistanable Uniqlo is but I see them as reasonable quality for reasonable price and a timeless style?

I have some Uniqlo pieces that are lasting ages

Somewhat contrarily, I've come to the conclusion that fast fashion is now so fast it is now slow. Simply because the speed at which fast fashion is churned out means that fashion generally has become so diverse recognisable trends are obsolete.

That articulates my thoughts really well. I'm frequently puzzled by the "what's on trend"/ " what are we wearing this season"/ threads which link to tbh, often not particularly interesting clothes.

I suppose, for me anyway, brands like Zara, H&M, Mint Velvet, Next, Shein, Whistles, Jigsaw have no discernible brand look so maybe it's more important that they have to look different each "season".

The opposite of that are brands which are either loved or loathed on here (Toast being one) which are instantly recognisable so "what's on trend this season" isn't that important for those brands and their customers.

I describe Uniqlo as fast fashion because it responds quickly to markets trends but despite talking a good talk about 'policies', I've seen little evidence that it is paying fair wages and providing fair working conditions for its workers, or of any initiatives that have actively reduced water consumption and greenhouse gas emissions in its supply chain. The allegations of using cotton sourced from Xinjiang were a particular cause for concern for me.

Fair enough, that is what the phrase means, but it's not what I've ever seen them doing. The nylon crescent bag going viral was just random rather than them hopping on a trend.

Cotton sourcing is a different , and very serious, question.

I wouldn't buy anything from Shein or Temu.

I've never bought from Uniqlo but there stuff seems to be fairly plain and basic rather than fast fashion.

I was very unimpressed with the Ines de la Fresange collaboration where a jacket was described as "tweed" but the content had as much sheep DNA in it as I have.

I don't have the horror that some MNers have about synthetic fibres but I really don't like something which isn't tweed being sold as tweed.

The algorithms for Temu are interesting. It's constantly popping up despite my never voluntarily looking for it. I got this dress popping up. Which is, I have to admit, gorgeous but I wouldn't buy it.

Temu dress

Which is obviously a rip off of these considerably expensive Alémais dresses. (Which I look at a lot)

I see the cotton sourcing and associated 'forced labour' issue as part of the wider model to deliver low-priced goods - described as delivering 'value' by Uniqlo in an attempt to differentiate, but still achieved through the 'fast fashion' model of exploiting its workers.

I do like sheins clothing. I buy for myself and kids. I find the clothing really nice.

Temu on the other hand clothing wise never brought any from here but the toys come out sooo damn tiny. .

I do like that dress u added from temu tho

Nelliemellie · 24/12/2023 20:16

Uniqlo clothes never seem to wear out. Their end of sales used to be unbelievably good value. They don’t have the same reductions any more, sadly. Really good quality on par with the old m and s.

This Temu dress is pretty nice too. Again, it's a rip off of Alémais with perhaps a smattering of Zimmerman or Eponine. I'm not going to buy either of them but I'd love to see it in real life.
