Can you help me find my dream coat please?

Hello! Hoping the collective Mumsnet wisdom can help me as I’ve been looking for a while with no success! I haven’t posted on this board before but do read it regularly.

I’m trying to find a smart-ish coat in black / grey / brown that’s wool-blend type material (if not wool which will probably be too expensive as I don’t want to spend more than about £300). I’m size 6-8 so don’t like anything oversized and want it to be a bit fitted - either slim fit or with a belt or the ‘fit and flare’ style - and around knee length (ish) as I’m only 5’4 and think I’d look silly in a full length or midi length.

The problem is I really want to find something with a hood! Most coats of this type I’ve seen don’t have hoods, apart from one from Max Mara which is perfect but costs way too much😱😱😱, or one from John Lewis which is also perfect but it’s over £500 😱. I also found a duffel coat from Gloverall to fit the bill, but not keen on the toggles.

Does anyone know if something affordable like this even exists? Please help!

Wow, that was quick! The hood is in a different fabric though 😕, plus it looks a little over-sized…thanks anyway though 😊.

You’re right, they do seem to be a rare find, not really sure why!

Might be because they're not waterproof so a hood doesn't really have a purpose?

botemp · 22/12/2023 20:35

This one is similar to the MM also comes in black.

And this one is over budget but 100% wool.

mdinbc · 22/12/2023 21:10

Of course the hood has a purpose, Sunnysdays. It might not keep you dry on a hike, but it will keep you dry for a city block or two, and keep the wind off.

If they are available in UK, Mackage makes good quality winter coats, many with hoods.

I suppose…I just find that I like a hood for even those few spots of rain until you can into the car etc, or for keeping my ears warm when it’s windy!

Ooh thanks! Will look into it, sounds promising and looks like a possibility from first glance.

Exactly 👍

Thanks -they do have a UK version of their site, just had a look and the coats are beautiful…but the price 😮

This one from Yoox any good?

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 22/12/2023 23:23

Zara

Usernamenotavailabletryanother · 22/12/2023 23:26

Zara again

Defiantlynot41 · 23/12/2023 00:06

I would hold off for the sales if you can, it's been a mild winter so far and coats are often heavily discounted. Better to spend your budget on a half price better quality coat if you can wait a week or two

MerylSqueak · 23/12/2023 00:15

The Max Mara one is gorgeous. Perhaps it will come down again in the sale.

lenalemonade · 23/12/2023 00:28

Not wool but check out Rainsisters !
I love their coats ,have two and am hoping some cash from Santa may find a third one .

Those are beautiful! Probably not as warm as I’d want, but I feel like I want one anyway, they’re so pretty 🤩

HarryOHayandBettyOBarley: I didn’t know these existed. I think it wouldn’t be quite the look I’m going for, but definitely interesting for a different type of coat. Thanks!

MerylSqueak: I know! I’ve been looking at it for over a year now but never found it reduced. I even tried it on in Selfridges once.

Defiantlynot41: yes, agreed. I’m not in a huge hurry so could wait a month or so.

Is that you Joseph?

Oldraver · 23/12/2023 07:34

I think I'd be tempted by the Gloverall one as I have been looking at it for years. It is never discounted

Divebar2021 · 23/12/2023 10:55

If you’re looking at Zara you might consider a Chinese manufacture. I couldn’t link this one but the Ali Express app has an image search function
