I think we had a thread like this last year and I found it interesting and quite useful!

Mine are:

(The first two might be more health related, but think they'll improve my appearance too)

  1. Get more exercise
  1. Drink less wine
  1. Style my hair in the morning
  1. Declutter my wardrobe (being realistic about what I actually wear)
  1. Come up with a style uniform / outfit formulae for everyday wear (I've been trying to do this for a while now)
  1. Get a new job (not related to s&b really but I suppose the dress code might be different if I move out of current job with old fashioned, formal dress code)!

Oh and 7. Cook more - I eat too many sandwiches / quick meals

Same as your number 5 - find a look that works for me!

HamHand · 22/12/2023 10:46

Great idea for a thread. I massively decluttered my wardrobe last month, partly because I’m on a, so far successful, weight loss mission that I’m determined will be the last time I have to lose this weight after yo-yoing for all of my adult life. I’ve kept only the things that actually make me feel good and that I want to wear, not just stuff that ‘will do’. I’ve ended up with a really nice, much sparser, collection of clothes that are really lovely quality. Switching my mindset to not needing to buy new things will be an ongoing challenge, especially as I buy and sell clothes for a living so the temptation will always be there. I’ll need to shop for new things as my weight goes down, but I’ll keep the aim for fewer, better quality pieces.

Apert from that, I want to take better care of myself overall. I had a haircut last week that was my first for a year, and had less than an inch for the bottom. I have long hair and am now thinking of getting a more dramatic change, I don’t do anything with my hair really and it would be nice to get a style that looks more deliberate.

I’ve had a few gel manicures this year that, while I love them while they’re on, have totally wrecked my nails. It’s not worth it for the 2 weeks of then looking good so I’m also going to try to get my nails in better shape.

Overall be a bit kinder to myself. I’ve had issues with body image for the last 30 years and tbh I’m tired of it.

AtillaTheHon · 22/12/2023 10:50

@HamHand a lot of what you say resonates with me too!

I no longer get my nails done. I just do my own cuticle care etc at home and paint with clear polish. Gel nails aren't for me these days and I do feel as if the removal was damaging my nails.

I want to do the same as you have done with your wardrobe; only have the things I love wearing. I've made a bit of a start and put some things aside for donation today.

@ErnestCelendine yes, I want the ease of knowing what to wear with what. I think a big trying on session might be needed to establish that

I did this last year and have managed most of them. Lost 3 stone, style my hair in the mornings, eat better/cook more.

I still need to exercise more and your number 5 is still a goal of mine but I just don't really know how to do it! Any pointers?

AtillaTheHon · 22/12/2023 11:30

@TitaniasAss sadly not! But I'm going to do some Google research - very scientific Grin

I feel as if trying outfits on will be the key for me. I rarely bother to have a try on session until I'm already getting ready and then it's a bit chaotic.

Mairzydotes · 22/12/2023 11:48

I have a list of items I would like for my wardrobe, and that fit the style I go for.

Look after my clothes and footwear , clean them and keep them in good condition.

Be mindful of portion sizes as I can easily over eat which eventually leads to wait gain.

Have more photos of myself . I don't have any recent ones.

Yes this is me exactly! I often have an idea in my head that I think will look great but don't try it on. Then I get ready to go out and it doesn't look how I thought it would at all! 😂

I think I have two or three 'outfits' that I know look put together, the rest of the time I think I'm just a bit 'blah'. I often find that the simplest looks are the best on me.

Ponks · 22/12/2023 23:03
  • Don't save things for best, I'm terrible for buying something I really like then keeping it in tissue paper so I don't spoil it by actually wearing it
  • go for quality. Buy less, buy better.
  • make an effort with my hair, I feel so much better with clean hair but hate the palaver of drying & "styling" it
  • de clutter makeup , already did that this year and realise I can be a bit tougher
cuthbertthecat · 23/12/2023 08:37

I'm 50 in 2024 so a bit of a milestone. Mostly it's about a bit of holistic self care

  1. I started exercising last year with a pt but it's a bit sporadic. I do enjoy it but I want to enjoy moving my body (I am by nature a sloth). So I would like to get back to swimming and walk a bit more as well as keep up the gym. Maybe do a bit of yoga. I want these things to become hobbies not chores as I do enjoy them all
  1. Eat better and hopefully gently shift some weight but mostly for health reasons. Find a balance.
  1. Sort out my hair! I stopped colouring maybe 6 years ago but the grey has been so slow to come in. It washes me out and ages me because there is no contrast. Hairdresser keeps trying to talk me into highlights
  1. Buy better, buy less, buy what suits. lol
  1. Find my perfect lipstick

For those who want to fine nail nirvana, I have become seduced by the nail wrap trend and I really rate them...

AtillaTheHon · 23/12/2023 11:03

I've just turned 40 @cuthbertthecat, so a milestone year for me too!

I just find anything on my nails to be a bit of a pain these days and I think mine do look quite nice au natural Grin. But I used to love having something on my nails for weddings etc, so may have to look into nail wraps.

I've also been growing out my blonde hair dye. I'm naturally dark blonde and I just wanted to see what it was like without hair dye. I've spent ages growing it out and now realise I don't love my natural colour Hmm. Think I might get some highlights in the NY...

@Ponks Yes, I share your feelings on saving things for best. Found myself saying I didn't want to wear my new joggers and sweatshirt set because didn't want to ruin the newness the other day. Ridiculous really! They're joggers FGS Grin

A bit of a weird one, but wear more sports clothes. Not yoga pants and trendy leisurewear, but actual sports clothes.

I got a hand-me-up old Superdry football sweater (younger brother had outgrown it) and I love the way it looks on me. It couldn’t be more different from the dark/neutral Lululemon and Varley gear I usually wear, but it’s got a cool retro feel and reminds me of simpler times.

So I will be trawling charity shops and vintage markets for old sports clothes, probably mens.

Megbryan · 23/12/2023 11:28

get rid of old clothes that I don’t wear and get out walking more.

TheOGCCL · 23/12/2023 11:33

Stop spending so much money on stuff I don’t need and isn’t going to change my life.

AtillaTheHon · 23/12/2023 12:12

I saw a youtuber the other day talking about how she has a rule that she only shops in person in the first instance. So she can look online but not buy anything till she's seen it in person where possible! I quite like this rule.

I go to the shops and never find anything I like in my size typically, but sometimes just seeing the thing irl helps gauge quality etc. I could also try something on in the wrong size and at least have an idea of how it fits so I can order the right size online.

There are some brands I like which don't have many actual shops though, but I don't need any more clothes anyway, so maybe this would be a good rule to put in place to stop me buying unnecessary crap.

OP posts:
TitaniasAss · 23/12/2023 12:35

@cuthbertthecat can you recommend a good brand of nail wrap? How easy are they to use? I love the idea of them just not sure I would be any good at doing them myself!

cuthbertthecat · 23/12/2023 13:53

@TitaniasAss I have holy grail nails and am waiting for some Lily and fox ones. I have gone for plain ones (although will be doing Christmas snow flakes this afternoon).

I am very cack handed and I have small nails so I have to trim but they still look good....

EtiennePalmiere · 23/12/2023 16:56

1-3 are mine as well !

For 5, it helped me to write down every item I bought for a year, and how many times (roughly) I wore each thing (could just be "lots". This showed me the type of thing I wore 0-2 times so not worth buying, and things I wore to death which were the only things worth buying. I wrote down the shop too to see which brands I shouldn't even look at if I never wore their stuff.

Seems like a faff but it was years ago and really sorted me out. I still keep track of what.i buy without the details to make sure I'm not derailing. It only takes a few seconds on a phone note app.

superplumb · 23/12/2023 19:33

Lose weight
Exercise using weights
I'm getting my colours done in the new year so that should help with shopping got clothes

Zireael · 24/12/2023 09:02

I'm turning 40 next month and want to feel more 'put together' and happier in my own skin. So I am going to:

  1. Get my colours done - I have been interested in this for ages
  2. Get regular haircuts - I can go a year or more between cuts
  3. Keep up a simple but effective skin care routine
  4. Walk more, because I enjoy it once I get out there, and it really helps clear my head
Gensola · 24/12/2023 09:07

-I’ve lost a stone this year (since August) and need to lose the same again.

-Gym 4 days a week and 15,000 steps a day

-Get my hair to blonde (currently colouring over years of dark box dye and at a mid brown with blonde streaks)

-whiten teeth - considering Invisalign if anyone has done that before?

Gensola · 24/12/2023 09:08

@Zireael i just had my colours and shape done by Emily from Style Me Happy (my reward for losing a stone) and it’s been a revelation!

Zireael · 24/12/2023 10:20

@Gensola - fantastic! I really looking forward to it, as well as being able to buy clothes more consciously, and notwaste money on things that just don't suit me!

dudsville · 24/12/2023 10:30

I never used to do these kinds of theings but I was feelig really run down the Christmas/New Year before covid and had made the conscious decision to do less, to see less of the poeple who aren't close to me, to do less of the things I didn't want to do, etc., I must say covid really helped me cement my thinking on that one!

The one after that I realised I was still wearing things that I didn't absoltely love, so I did a big overharul of my wardrobe, and that also resulted in generally taking a little more pride in my appearance, and it streamlined my shopping, so I don't shop as a hobby anymore just day to day.

I don't remember if I had anything for last year, but this year has been huge with family members being very unwell and nearly dying and my own poor health and then a significant diagnosis for me which left me reeling. I spent most of the latter part of the year in fuck-it mode, spending a little crazily, etc., but I got hold of myself last month and joined a gym - so that's my positive change for this year, to look after my health.

bjjgirl · 24/12/2023 10:30

So I am very fit and healthy but I have adhd so I either look great all done up or a bag of shite

My goal is to be consistent looking less crap:

Brush hair every day
Serum daily
Make up every day for work (even if I am working out in the middle of the day)
Get laser hair removal
Perfum daily
