Who's good at perfume? I need some advice please!

So mum has been using Estee Lauder Youth Dew for ever and she's sick of it and asked me to find her an alternative for Christmas. I can go to a John Lewis tomorrow, with lots of choice. Anyone have a clue what I should look for? Mum says she would like something similar but not the same as she's bored with it(!) And yes, I know perfume shopping for someone else is a fool's errand, but mum was very sure that is what she wanted, so...

I would be VERY grateful for any words of advice.

The Perfume Society does beautifully curated boxes of samples. They are proper, grown-up perfumes from reputable perfume houses, not pink confections with celebrity branding. A box or two would be a very attractive present and your mum could have the fun of trying out different ones.

Tauer L’air du Desert Marocain would be a lovely alternative to Youth Dew. It’s classed as oriental and woody, and it is heavenly.

i agree with catchant that a box of samples is a good idea. i think they may do them at JL.

I agree a box of samples so she can experiment & hopefully find a new love.
But if you want one bigger bottle along the same lines as Youth Dew I’d suggest a Guerlain, especially Shalimar or Mitsouko as being in the same “type” but not the same.
