New hair style trend for short/mid left hair?

Are layers in? My hair is mid/short length and I have to straighten it. Wasn't sure whether to add something layers and bangs or side fringe. I am early 40s though

Absolutely. My hair is way too thick without layers in. In fact I'm off to the hairdressers just now as my layers have grown out. I've just turned 40 and my hair would look ridiculous without layers.
