Why do Vinted clothes smell so sweet - like bubblegum?

Almost every piece of clothing I get from Vinted smells so sickly and overpowering - I know it must be the conditioner, and maybe it's because we don't use that sort of scented conditioner (or a more gentle scent) but I find it so overpowering.

I realise it would be worse for dirty clothes to fall out...but am I the only one who doesn't like it?

I've noticed that. I suspect Febrise spray.

terriblyangryattimes · 01/12/2023 17:14

Yes I've noticed this a lot. I think people give their clothes a good spray of febreeze or diluted fabric softener and then close the bag. Or they use handfuls of those smelly beads in with their wash loads so their clothes always smell 'fresh' (if you can call synthetic smells fresh)

I usually wash vinted things as soon as they arrive anyway just in case so it wouldn't bother me if something smelt musty to start with.

Tinybrother · 01/12/2023 17:14

It’s just other people’s washing powder/fabric conditioner. I don’t use anything scented so I no idea what mine smells of.

KirstenBlest · 01/12/2023 19:07

Unstoppables, I think. Whatever it is it has a strange almost slimy feel and the smell does not wash out. I've tried every single remedy known to mumsnetkind.

I remember messaging a seller on Vinted to ask about the sizing of a dress.

She replied, saying it was her Mother-in-Law's, who heavily smokes and she'd not revommend buying it if I am sensitive to cigarette smells
.
I often wonder if it sold.

stopringingme · 01/12/2023 19:17

Febreeze seems to be the scent of choice for vinted sellers.

After the item has been stuck in a parcelbag for a few days the smell intensifies.

I cannot stand the stuff - it needs banning as far as I am concerned.

Why can they just not send clean items instead of spraying it with this horrible stinky stuff.

headcheffer · 01/12/2023 19:18

I always find Vinted stuff smells. I wash it straight away, even though it's likely just the smell of other people's laundry liquid.

Coldwater12 · 01/12/2023 19:48

Ok, it's not just me! Glad to hear it

😂Thank god she was honest

Glad I found this thread. I wondered if it was just me. Vinted stuff always smells like this and is so hard to get rid of. WHY?! Why use these awful scent beads?!

Faldodiddledee · 03/10/2024 11:42

I have had this occasionally, although one time the person sent a lovely Hollister top which smelt so lovely that I've been trying to work out what the perfume it was. It wasn't cheapo scent boosters for sure. I'd love to smell like that lady!

CavalierApproach · 03/10/2024 11:43

I’ve noticed this too. I had a new with tags hoodie from Vinted that took about 10 washes to stop reeking of artificial lilies or whatever.

I imagine it being the same people who use those intensely synthetic overpowering air freshener plug-ins in airbnbs they run 😷

notatinydancer · 03/10/2024 11:51

I've never noticed this.
I messaged someone once because a top absolutely stank of damp.
I just wash stuff ( no conditioner) before I send it.

Dogsitterwoes · 06/10/2024 16:19

I think they Febrese the hell out of them instead of washing stuff.

Coolcats24 · 06/10/2024 16:25

I tried vinted on recommendation from someone at work. I'm disappointed
Both sold as new with tags
Item 1 very strong damp or musty smell. I've tried washing and febreze but can't shift it
Item 2 is nice, fits well but smells strongly of perfume. Quite overpowering and I don't use perfume
I probably won't use vinted again

Ittakeslonger · 28/03/2025 20:28

I totally agree. I hate it. I think it might be air freshener. I have asked for clothes to be sent unsprayed but forgot this week and my clothes smell overpowering despite two washes!!!

madaboutpurple · 28/03/2025 20:30

I think it is lovely actually!

This, it’s repulsive if you aren’t someone who gets on with strong chemically smells.

TheLette · 30/03/2025 21:03

Febreeze or an insane amount of fabric conditioner. I had a family member at my house recently and she washed some of the kids clothes (very kindly) but must have used an absolute ton of fabric conditioner as they smelt very strongly of it after. We only use a tiny bit, like maybe half a capful in a full wash, and avoid the strongly smelling ones. Bleurgh.

Peachbubble · 31/03/2025 17:41

Oh yes I've noticed this too! Some of it's so sickly sweet, it's awful and takes several washes to get rid of the smell, all unnecessary extra washing.

I just send stuff freshly washed, unless it's brand new. Never use fabric conditioner or Febreze anyway.

WeirdyBeardyMarrowBabyLady · 31/03/2025 18:11

I have never experienced this at all.

Housewife2010 · 01/04/2025 06:37

The only time I use Febreze is to fumigate my teenage son's shoes!

dudsville · 01/04/2025 07:36

I just bought something that smells kind of like pine. I don't know what to make of it. Could it be cannabis?
