Jumper/cardigan for over a dress?

I'm looking for a jumper/cardigan for over maxi dresses and knee length dresses. Smart casual. I'm 5foot 5 and size 16 so there's the possibility of looking frumpy. I really don't want to!

Yes, that's very difficult to find something that works with both.
For midi/maxi dresses I have a neat round neck fitted cardiganthis sort of thing and a similar style ribbed v neck one, ( mine's a merino one from Uniqlo) but I can't say I feel particularly cool in it. A denim or leather jacket works better, or if you found the right gilet- I've got an aviator style one which works quite well.
My wool biker style cardigan looks terrible with dresses, and longer boyfriend-style ones look too grungey for me, though might be OK on you if you are young. I still haven't found the answer, really, am interested to see what other people suggest.

I think it really depends on the dress, unfortunately.

Similar to these dresses in style. I have different colours though - mine are darker.
