Help me find a leather biker-style jacket that doesn't cost the earth!

I've never had one. What I do have is a black velvet biker-y jacket (charity shop find, it was brand new!) which I've recently started wearing with dresses and really like. It's the classic shape with the huge flappy collar which can zip all the way to the neck and then not be flappy - I do NOT have the fashionista vocab for describing it but you know what I mean! I pretty much live in dresses - tea dresses when I can fit into them, recently acquired a lovely 50's style wiggle skirt (black with red cherries on) which is fun and looks great with my velvet jacket. At least I think it does. I'm 50, a curvy 16 and have a pouchy peri-meno belly...

I'm not sure we can justify the expense (and this has been a really expensive autumn, what with house repairs and vet fees) but if I could find a nice leather biker-y jacket for Christmas that would be great. I think black but I do also like the dark blue or even dark grey ones you see sometimes - black would be most versatile though? I have various boots at hand but mostly live in my DMs in winter (I have a black pair with small flowers on, and a brown pair). I imagine wearing this over dresses that hit my knee, or that skirt.

My issue is that I really need to try before I buy. Because they're not usually part of every clothing store's line-up, I don't know where to look. I'm close to Oxford with its shops (not sure I have time before Christmas to go as far as Bicester Village (hate the place!) but perhaps...). I met someone the other day who was wearing a really beautiful one which turned out to be from All Saints (mind you, she is slender and young and lovely, which I am no longer). I know All Saints have an outlet at Bicester but imagine still £££s. It was gorgeous though. Are there any other places where I can try on similar that don't involve a lot of travel?

I'll link one I like from there to give an idea of what I'm after. I'm less keen on the ones that have an in-built belt at the waist. I'm also high-waisted - cropped things used to look ok sometimes (cardigans!) but now with my belly... This one isn't really cropped though. It's also nice in dark red...

If you have a TK Maxx near you, they have them quite often. A couple of years ago I found a gorgeous dove grey DKNY Jacket at a bargain price. Also a Massimo Dutti sheepskin flying jacket.

Mine is an actual motorbike jacket but the armour is removable for fashion use, bought it from Amazon last summer before a European bike trip, it is the style you describe, Marlon Brando style. I'm your size, they run small so go up a few sizes. I paid £89

mmm, they do look extremely good quality - I was blown away by the beauty of the one I saw in person the other week! Really fine-grained and soft leather too. I'd have asked to try it on but she was several sizes smaller than me (and I don't really know her ).

ordinarily that would be my go-to, particularly for a costly item like this, but I need to try on a few first to make sure the things actually SUIT me!

I bought a beautiful All Saints leather jacket from Vinted after trying them on in the store so I could make sure I was buying the right size/style.

I wish I'd sent mine back then re bought on eBay though - they seem to come up small and I really should have sized up.

The All Saints ones are beautiful but definitely an investment. They sometimes do 20% off. Otherwise, the best one I’ve had was from Oasis. It’s at least ten years old and still looks okay.

Vinted or eBay - set up a search for a River Island leather biker jackets. I love mine - fits really well and soft leather. True to size and they do a plus size range. They hold their resell value. My friend loved mine so much (I got it via ASOS a good several years ago) that I got her one on Vinted for around £40 and she loves it. Check with the seller that it is genuine leather.

Oh I wish I had seen this thread earlier! Have been searching for a few weeks and after browsing the usual , vinted being my first stop everytime , and with £100 budget , I decided to go for real leather. Had a couple of faux ones but the other contender was from Zara and was £35 in vinted and £69 I think in the shop. Have just ordered this this morning
