So I have seen these lovely Chanel bags pop up on my instagram feed and I naively thought “ooh they are nice I wonder how much they are?” In my head I was thinking £2/3k my eyeballs almost fell out of my head when I saw they are OVER £8k!

wow just wow, I’d want a bodyguard out with me if I was flashing one of those!

I will have to think of something else for my Christmas list this year 😂

Haha yes the prices have gone up. the Price has gone crazy since COVID. Even in 2021 a jumbo was 6k and now it is about 9k. The quality isn’t worth it now.

AHelpfulHand · 07/11/2023 13:59

Surely hardly anyone will pay that?

Vintagevixen · 07/11/2023 14:00

Wow! I bought mine which is virtually identical in about 2003 for just over £1000 in Selfridges. That's a massive leap up in price.

mollycoddle77 · 07/11/2023 14:01

They obviously don't want any mere povvos owning their bags 🤷‍♀️

CandleWick4 · 07/11/2023 14:06

Yes the Chanel price increases have been crazy the past couple of years. They’re trying to go down the Hermes route and price people out. People who maybe would have treated themselves to a £2k bag who otherwise don’t live particularly lavish lifestyles can now no longer get one. £6-8k for a bag is not reasonable to the average person.
You’ve now got too actually properly rich to get one.
I was considering one for my 40th which is next year but it’s too much now. I’ll be eyeing up a lovely YSL or the new Celine 16 that’ll go for around £2.5k and will probably be better quality

absolutelyhadit · 07/11/2023 14:08

I like it in yellow <misses the point>

IggySlave · 07/11/2023 14:09

i really wanted a classic flap and went with a woc because i just couldn't justify since the price increases.

i do keep looking at preloved classic flaps though, the quality of the older bags are superior to what they are now also.

Nw22 · 07/11/2023 14:12

@CandleWick4 the Celine 16 is beautiful

Nw22 · 07/11/2023 14:13

@IggySlave vintage is so much better quality and they have real gold plating

InTheRainOnATrain · 07/11/2023 14:19

😱 WTAF?! I actually own this bag; it was an 18th birthday present and cost about £1500 in the late 00s. How has the cost gone up so much??

MonumentalLentil · 07/11/2023 14:22

Mine was £800 in 1990 something. (Not a jumbo). Black lambskin, my first Chanel bag. I look at it from time to time but have no need to take it out any more and can't bring myself to sell it. Far superior to any other bag I owned.

CanIPetThatDawg · 07/11/2023 14:23

They must have decided that too many plebs were pottering about with a Chanel bag on their arm.

therealcookiemonster · 07/11/2023 14:31

waste of money.

DaphneduM · 07/11/2023 14:35

Coincidentally I was reading an article about 'Baroness' Mone today - the accompanying picture of her in her robes showed her carrying a large Chanel bag. No comment!!!!!

🤣😂 clearly guilted as charged!!

windmill26 · 07/11/2023 14:46

Everything seems to have gone a bit crazy...I was looking at the Margot from The Row and the bigger size is around £6000 (and mostly sold out!). I love good quality items but there is no way I can justify that price for a handbag .

CanIPetThatDawg · 07/11/2023 14:23

They must have decided that too many plebs were pottering about with a Chanel bag on their arm.

Indeed. If you have to look at the price, you can't afford it.

Unless you are planning on buying as an investment, in which case it's best to check.

potatoheads · 07/11/2023 15:35

AHelpfulHand · 07/11/2023 13:59

Surely hardly anyone will pay that?

They dint want everyone buying one. That defeats the whole point of exclusivity

CanIPetThatDawg · 07/11/2023 15:37

It's like when Burberry shut down loads of stores and hiked their prices, to try and claw back their brand's reputation.

CanIPetThatDawg · 07/11/2023 15:39

InTheRainOnATrain · 07/11/2023 14:44

At least you're a pleb with a Chanel bag! I can't claim the same.

JustWhatWeDontNeed · 07/11/2023 15:41

AHelpfulHand · 07/11/2023 13:59

Surely hardly anyone will pay that?

I think that's what they're aiming for, to be honest.

They're modelling themselves on Hermes and their "you can have a Birkin if we let you have a Birkin" way of doing business.

Even Chanel lovers and collectors are checking out due to the price increase/drop in quality.

heyhohello · 07/11/2023 15:42

I feel I can get exclusivity by using my very useful, just the right colour and size bag from a charity shop (Air Ambulance IIRC). There was only one in the shop, no one else has one and Air Ambulance got a few pounds from me that day into the bargain. 😉

I love fashion and new and different styles but I shop all over the place. Just pick out stuff I like.

heyhohello · 07/11/2023 15:44

Oh and Air Ambulance were pleased to sell it to me. I don't like the idea of brands judging their customers to see if they're good enough'.
