So I have seen these lovely Chanel bags pop up on my instagram feed and I naively thought “ooh they are nice I wonder how much they are?” In my head I was thinking £2/3k my eyeballs almost fell out of my head when I saw they are OVER £8k!

wow just wow, I’d want a bodyguard out with me if I was flashing one of those!

I will have to think of something else for my Christmas list this year 😂

One of my greatest regrets in life is that I didn’t buy a classic Chanel bag when they were circa 2k and I lived with my parents while earning a full time wage. Crazy prices now.

Alwaystheplusone · 07/11/2023 19:18

Half of the ones you see out and about are fakes. Very very hard to tell the difference

Seriously who in their right mind would spend £8.5k on a frigging handbag? You can buy a car for that.

well as this thread shows they are investment pieces. If you bought one 10 years ago for £1.5k and they’re now selling used at £5k plus it’s an investment. Same as Hermes. Because of the way they sell their resell values are hugely more than their original retail cost.

Starseeking · 07/11/2023 19:19

My DSis bought one about 6 years ago and I'm sure it was roughly £2.3k, £8k is crazy.

LoveYouHoneyBadger · 07/11/2023 19:23

Looks like crap too. You could pick a similar cheap bag up from primark. Labels are nonsense

43ontherocksporfavor · 07/11/2023 19:25

I always say there are no Chanel cows that I am aware of. Leather is leather. Only a moron would buy those.

I like it in yellow <misses the point>

I also spotted the lovely yellow one!

Dh gets us tix to the opera house and it's wall to wall chanel in the stalls.

I just got an insurance cheque for miscellaneous gucci and lv handbags. They came to £6k so I'm thinking of topping up to get the caviar version of the classic flap....

I go a lot of opera, London and other cities. I look at what people wear but don't notice their handbags.

Sexnotgender · 07/11/2023 19:27

The prices are crazy now. I can justify £2k on a bag, I can’t justify £8k. And I can’t see how it’s worth that much.

vernatheraven · 07/11/2023 19:28

£8k for a bag or £8k off my mortgage or an amazeballs holiday. I wouldn't choose the bag Confused

I get a lovely counterfeit in real leather on my amazeballs holiday.

If your that rich though I suppose it's just pocket change

Hibernatalie · 07/11/2023 19:29

It is beautiful though

Graasspp · 07/11/2023 19:29

I only know one person with a real birkin, and seen her use it once
Quite a few chanel in my town tho

Libertass · 07/11/2023 19:29

There are far more rich people in the world now (particularly in brand-obsessed China) than there have ever been, so luxury brands have to hike their prices, restrict supply, or both to maintain exclusivity. The whole point is that not everyone can afford one.

The value & aspiration is in the power of the brand and the status that brand is perceived to confer on the wearer. Ignore the branding, and it’s just a handbag, at the end of the day.

Yeah, totally the same thing 🙄

It's worth it if it's worth it to you. Handbags aren't something I notice so it's not worth it for me.

I couldn't tell a fake from a real one unless the fake was really obvious from a distance. Louis Vuitton even more so - tend to assume most of them are fake.

I don't think it is. Not keen on the quilting.

crumblingschools · 07/11/2023 19:33

I find it interesting that a number of posters have said the quality isn’t very good now. Why would anyone spend £8k on a badly made bag? More money than sense

Said no one that actually has one in real life!

crumblingschools · 07/11/2023 19:34

I think it looks ugly too

Yes the Chanel price increases have been crazy the past couple of years. They’re trying to go down the Hermes route and price people out. People who maybe would have treated themselves to a £2k bag who otherwise don’t live particularly lavish lifestyles can now no longer get one. £6-8k for a bag is not reasonable to the average person.
You’ve now got too actually properly rich to get one.
I was considering one for my 40th which is next year but it’s too much now. I’ll be eyeing up a lovely YSL or the new Celine 16 that’ll go for around £2.5k and will probably be better quality

With all due respect, £2k for a bag is not achievable for the average person.

I think I have a reasonable salary and there is no way I could justify £2k for a bag

The vintage ones are better quality but the new ones aren’t badly made.

Boomboom22 · 07/11/2023 19:36

It is ugly, is that the point? I don't know how you could tell this from any tu at sainsburys or marks bag tbh but I think anything over 30 quid for a bag is taking the piss.

That is the point, the luxury market is not aimed at the average person.

Jessforless · 07/11/2023 19:37

My most expensive bag is only (only 😂) about 1200 and I just wear it with jeans.. I don’t think you need to go somewhere dressy to wear a bag. They go with everything. Especially one like that… which I covet but could never afford!

grottyb · 07/11/2023 19:37

My sister has a fake woc from Singapore or similar & I can’t tell the difference with me tbh
