So I have seen these lovely Chanel bags pop up on my instagram feed and I naively thought “ooh they are nice I wonder how much they are?” In my head I was thinking £2/3k my eyeballs almost fell out of my head when I saw they are OVER £8k!

wow just wow, I’d want a bodyguard out with me if I was flashing one of those!

I will have to think of something else for my Christmas list this year 😂

I do find the Birkin model of 'mmmmmmaybe we'll sell a bag to you if we feel you've earnt it' fascinating.

😱 WTAF?! I actually own this bag; it was an 18th birthday present and cost about £1500 in the late 00s. How has the cost gone up so much??

Haha Same! It was £1200 in 1990-something then my 3 brothers bought it for my 21st after much nagging. I re-gifted it to my daughter on her 21st.

Love Chanel, but they've clearly gone mad.

I got the ballet flats for 395 euros tax free in 2019. The same shoes are almost £800!!!

I treated myself to a large classic black leather quilted Aspinal handbag this year. They're in the £400-700 range, but beautifully made and similar looking to Chanel. Aspinal frequently have 20% off sales. I'd be too nervous carrying £8k of handbag on my arm outdoors.

Tabitha005 · 07/11/2023 16:13

I feel Chanel has lost it ever since the TOWIE mob started getting papped carrying their handbags. Seeing as how EVERYTHING else about any of that lot looks cheap AF, they've done to Chanel what Daniella Westbrook did to Burberry.

Me too! I find the idea of people buying things they don't want and trying to suck up to the sales assistant absolutely nuts. See also: the Rolex bullshit. Completely manufactured scarcity.

Divebar2021 · 07/11/2023 16:23

I don’t actually know where I’d go to carry it. When I go to the theatre / restaurants etc it’s not that dressy anymore ( in London that is).

BellyButt · 07/11/2023 16:23

Yup, got mine in black Caviar back in 2015 for around £2800, now the same bag £8000. Im not buying anymore, the price increase is crazy. I'm not scared using it around as I saw lots of young people wearing the fake ones. Most of the Chanel lovers can identify the fake ones from far away.

Ibizafun · 07/11/2023 16:33

I've got a few from dh for birthdays but not the very classic ones. That's crazy money for a bag that size.

There's a whole strategy Chanel are pursuing with the price rises.

I love this! Thanks for sharing.

I was looking at bags on the LV website the other day, and I realised my brain was getting warped when I started thinking- ooh.. this one is only €1,900. WAIT only what am I thinking

roibustea · 07/11/2023 16:34

I know - very annoyed I didn't get one a decade or so ago but I decided against it as thought it was a bit old lady. Not sure I'd really want one though, I'd be so worried about hurting it and plus everybody would think it was a fake anyway. And in fairness, the only ones I see in person do tend to be attached to old ladies, though that might just be me. Would like one to sell though!

I tend to see them at the Opera House, in amidst all the jeans and trainers! That's the only 'upmarket' place I really frequent though.

laclochette · 07/11/2023 16:53

It is bananas. But I was just in Paris and you can pick up an authenticated vintage one for about £5k if that helps? 🤣🤣🤣

Never been so grateful to my younger self as for the fact that aged 17 I saved up all my summer job money and bought myself a Chanel flap when they were £850. This was about 18 years ago. The price inflation has been vast since then.

Those days are long gone with Birkins...unless you'd like a special order of course.

Chanelbagowner · 07/11/2023 17:28

Name changed for this… I got a limited edition quilted Chanel lamb skin for my 50th a couple of years back. It was a surprise and I didn’t know that’s what he was planning at all which was lovely…however, DH was fucked off with the whole purchase process - not able to order in advance, just had to take what was there on the day. If it helps anyone get over owning one 😂… I’m fucked off that the gold plating is absolutely rubbish and I’ve not even really used it that much. it wasn’t £8k, but it wasn’t that much less a couple of years ago either 😱

that said. I associate it with a beautiful birthday and it’d been a shitty year and it was lovely he thought about it all by himself.

grottyb · 07/11/2023 17:31

I have shoes but they were all under £300 & my woc was maybe 1.4k. I can’t justify any of the prices now tbh!

Nw22 · 07/11/2023 17:33

@Chanelbagowner if it’s a couple of years old it’s not gold plated. They stopped using real gold in 2008

Chanelbagowner · 07/11/2023 17:35

@Nw22 I know. I had a necklace that was the same that I returned it after two wears. It was ridiculous. Sadly DH had bought it a couple of months before my birthday so I couldn’t return the bag even if I had wanted to…

Aspinal bags are beautiful and such good quality.

GoodlifeGlow · 07/11/2023 17:39

Wow this is so interesting back when I was a big bag buyer in the 00s you didn’t see much Chanel around. Wish I’d got in then it would have been a great investment.

The video above was so interesting the fact Chanel paid out a 5 billion (can’t remember currency) dividend shows how much profit they are making on this stuff.

Theproofofthepudding · 07/11/2023 18:09

I was shocked to know they were about £800 in 1989 when I bought a hooky one in Singapore for about £40..the gold wore off eventually but it was beautiful leather.
Remember the perfume shop was not allowed to stock their perfumes because they wanted to be 'exclusive)

Dh gets us tix to the opera house and it's wall to wall chanel in the stalls.

I just got an insurance cheque for miscellaneous gucci and lv handbags. They came to £6k so I'm thinking of topping up to get the caviar version of the classic flap....

listsandbudgets · 07/11/2023 18:37

Absolutely misses the point but I've got a huge advert for baby changing bags in the middle of this thread - think the mumsnet advertising algorithm didn't quite read the room!!

£8k ... wow.. I don't think I've ever paid more than £60 for a handbag.. I'd want an armed guard (and a bank loan) if I bought that. Crazy price.

Doris86 · 07/11/2023 18:39

Seriously who in their right mind would spend £8.5k on a frigging handbag? You can buy a car for that.

I'm in my right mind and have (2) bags that cost more than £8k.

Goldbar31 · 07/11/2023 18:49

It’s bonkers!
I think the vintage ones are better quality and fortunately, I like them a little bit battered.
I’ve bought a few from auctions too at a very reasonable price.
I really can’t justify the new in store prices. Wild.
