GoodlifeGlow · 07/11/2023 13:55

So I have seen these lovely Chanel bags pop up on my instagram feed and I naively thought “ooh they are nice I wonder how much they are?” In my head I was thinking £2/3k my eyeballs almost fell out of my head when I saw they are OVER £8k!

https://www.chanel.com/gb/fashion/p/A01112Y0129594305/classic-handbag-lambskin/

wow just wow, I’d want a bodyguard out with me if I was flashing one of those!

I will have to think of something else for my Christmas list this year 😂

It is a shame that people can’t just think ‘wow, I would never spend £8k on a bag and so this isn’t the thread for me’ and just scroll on by. You don’t see them on the multiples board randomly popping up on a thread about cars saying ‘well I would never have 4 children because I hate children, I have a fish instead’.

Agree that the price hikes are crazy and puts many bags out of reach that would have been affordable pre-Covid.

Apparently us knowing they disapprove is very important to them. For some reason they seem to be under the impression that we’re obliged to care.

I wouldn’t buy new Chanel now tbh, even outside of the price increases. The quality is still good, but it’s not as good as it was.

Said no one that actually has one in real life!

Well, of course. Nobody's going to say "yes, I spent £8k on a bag, but I now recognise that it's just nicely put together but extortionate pieces of leather and the money would have been better spent on a new kitchen".

Someone who has one in real life has to maintain a belief that it's worth it. Otherwise the cognitive dissonance would be unbearable.

Many if not most of the people spending £8k on a bag can easily afford a new kitchen as well.

I have no problem acknowledging when something hasn’t been worth the money I’ve spent. One particular something cost more than £8k tbf. If I enjoy something it isn’t a waste of money to me, and what I choose to spend my money on doesn’t require justifying. Someone disapproving doesn’t constitute a me problem.

Tearsofamermaid · 07/11/2023 20:30

I’m not saying this to be wanky but I have several Chanel bags - however, I bought them all pre owned and in great condition from reputable sellers (all have been authenticated and are 100% genuine). I wouldn’t/couldn’t spend £8k on a bag but have spent what many on here would still consider to be obscene sums. I can afford it and just love handbags, so why not? Others might think nothing of dropping £4k+ on a family holiday (have never spent anywhere near that), dining out regularly at expensive restaurants (a splurge for us is Nando’s 😂) or buying a fancy car (I don’t drive and DH has a modest car which he bought secondhand a few years ago). We all have an Achilles heel and mine is a beautiful handbag.

The Chanel secret service officers will be at your door to confiscate your bags from you for using the term wanky. They disapprove of such slang.

No bag costs this much. You pay for the name- more fool you.

Nope, wear mostly Zimmermann, Christopher Kane and Tom Ford. Plenty of Massimo Dutti. Some Zara & Self Portrait. I'm 5'10, slim, and dress very well- Trashy doesn't even begin to feature.

As for Nouveau - I don't take that an insult. I'm a child of immigrants who struggled to send me to private school. I've been able to send my children to the best boarding schools and hopefully endowed them to be succesful. They are multi lingual, cultured and well rounded. My daughter has an offer of £52k waiting as she finishes Uni. They hopefully can sustain that and can in turn do better for their children. That's how generational wealth is built.

So possibly my grandchildren won't be nouveau.
Hope that helps

Are you the new Xenia?!

But the thread is about not wanting to spend that sort of money- it's not a paean to how wonderful Chanel is.

"I have major issues with counterfeit products. The majority of which funds organised crime and are made in sweat shops using modern slavery.
If you can’t afford the real thing then buy something else, there’s plenty of choice without buying counterfeit."

This.
In spades.

LondonQueen · 07/11/2023 20:52

Mine was £2500 in 2019, the same style bag is now £8000.

Chanelbagowner · 07/11/2023 20:55

I’m not about to justify ownership of a handbag I received as a gift, but neither will I be judged by the ‘why don’t you just buy a fake’ voices on here…just remember the counterfeit industry is run by organised crime gangs. The same gangs who launder money and run drugs/trafficking rings. Support that industry if you choose, but pardon me if I don’t join you.

And for anyone who genuinely thinks a retailer like primark is selling a handbag for less than the hourly minimum wage in this country but is somehow paying an overseas workers a fair wage after they’ve taken both their costs and profit margin, think again. They don’t.

Pokinganose · 07/11/2023 20:58

I don't like bags with chain straps so you're alright! Imagine the stress of going out with it and having to have it handcuffed to your arm! Or leg if you're sitting in a cafe!

Thats more of a reason why people used to buy knock offs.

Libertass · 07/11/2023 20:58

MummyJ12 · 07/11/2023 19:45

If you can’t afford the real thing then buy something else, there’s plenty of choice without buying counterfeit.

Also, if you think that people can’t tell the difference, you’re wrong. They look cheap.

I don’t know if this is the case with very high-end handbags, but a lot of ‘counterfeit’ branded luxury goods are made in the same factories, by the same people & from the same materials as the ‘genuine’ ones.

The only difference being that the ‘genuine’ ones go out of the front door of the factory & enter official distribution & retail channels, while the ‘counterfeits’ go out of the back door into unofficial channels.

Chanelbagowner · 07/11/2023 21:00

@Libertass they really don’t. I used to be in an industry that used high-end hides. There is no way that every piece of leather is not accounted for in the factories.

Missingmyusername · 07/11/2023 20:32

Well, they literally do. Some cost more.

Who cares whether people buy it for the name or not? It’s not your money being spent 🤷🏻‍♀️

Would you mind sharing where you got your pre owned from? I’m after a Chanel bag (& a Bottega Veneta) but like most of us can’t bear to pay £8K and wishing I’d bit the bullet when they were more affordable. I want something classic and good quality that’s not so expensive you’re afraid to take it out.

I’ve tried Farfetch, vestiare and a few others but would love a recommendation.

CesareBorgia · 07/11/2023 21:04

You cannot find a decent leather bag in Primark ffs lol

It's getting increasingly difficult to find a decent leather bag anywhere on the high street - all so much horrible stiff plastic tat. I don't blame people for spending more on a bag if they can afford it, just to get something of quality!

@Libertass you’re confusing counterfeit with “cabbage”. Basically, where the manufacturers would (in Italy predominantly) salvage the contingency materials and produce additional stock to sell themselves at market. This practice ceased years ago and now all houses have to have full transparency and traceability.
It has never happened in houses such as Chanel where they only ever have their own ateliers and do not have third party manufacturers. Gucci was a victim of cabbage but now it isn’t allowed to happen so you are incorrect.

Try NPN Bags (closed until January but worth the wait as the lady who runs it is amazing and her standards are very high in terms of condition) or some of the bag selling groups on Facebook - ‘The WOC Lounge’ is particularly good for preowned Chanel. Good luck and hope you find something lovely!

notlucreziaborgia · 07/11/2023 21:14

Also, in the event you want to combine your search with a city break, I can highly recommend spending some time rifling through vintage stores in Paris and/or Nice in particular.

Chanelbagowner · 07/11/2023 21:17

For anyone buying from an auction, familiarise yourself with auction language which subtly indicates if they think the bag is genuine or not. ‘In the style of’ or ‘inspired by’ are good examples. Generally owners of genuine bags don’t throw away the packaging or serial number cards. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is!

Yes the Chanel price increases have been crazy the past couple of years. They’re trying to go down the Hermes route and price people out. People who maybe would have treated themselves to a £2k bag who otherwise don’t live particularly lavish lifestyles can now no longer get one. £6-8k for a bag is not reasonable to the average person.
You’ve now got too actually properly rich to get one.
I was considering one for my 40th which is next year but it’s too much now. I’ll be eyeing up a lovely YSL or the new Celine 16 that’ll go for around £2.5k and will probably be better quality

YSL bags are garbage, not worth the money. If you're going to spend £2k+ on a handbag, buy from a brand who actually specialises in leather goods and prioritised them as part of their offer since the brand's inception. YSL and Celine are both RTW lines, ones that primarily focused on clothing, not handbags and leather goods. However, out of the two, Celine is the better of the two. Loewe and Bottega Veneta are far better quality, ditto Prada and Fendi to name a few more.

bunnybunnybunnybunny · 07/11/2023 21:25

Chanel handbags and their small leather goods haven't been worth the money for quite a while now. They're pretty much mass-produced due to the sheer number of Chanel boutiques around the world. Their only real claim to exclusivity these days is the fact they don't see online. Even so, the quality of the bags is shocking. Even the gold hardware is no longer gold plated.

A few years ago, their costume jewellery, scarves and even their Exclusifs de ChanelL perfume was well-priced, the latter only available in a handful of Chanel boutiques around the world. But now, their prices are rising steeply and yearly, making it stupidly expensive, and the Exclusifs is sold not only in every Chanel boutique, but a myriad department stores Chanel perfume counters and make-up concessions. Hardly exclusif 🙄

@Lovethatforyouhun If anything, you sound like a bit of a snob!

Nouveau isn't an insult, and besides, today's old money were once nouveau too. Everyone has to start somewhere, and there's nothing wrong with that, nor enjoying the rewards of one's financial success.

@Myfabby

My parents were proudly nouveau (riche). Regrettably, I am nouveau poor! 😂
