So I have seen these lovely Chanel bags pop up on my instagram feed and I naively thought “ooh they are nice I wonder how much they are?” In my head I was thinking £2/3k my eyeballs almost fell out of my head when I saw they are OVER £8k!

wow just wow, I’d want a bodyguard out with me if I was flashing one of those!

I will have to think of something else for my Christmas list this year 😂

YSL bags are garbage, not worth the money. If you're going to spend £2k+ on a handbag, buy from a brand who actually specialises in leather goods and prioritised them as part of their offer since the brand's inception. YSL and Celine are both RTW lines, ones that primarily focused on clothing, not handbags and leather goods. However, out of the two, Celine is the better of the two. Loewe and Bottega Veneta are far better quality, ditto Prada and Fendi to name a few more.

Bottega are excellent quality. Also, Dior. I would actually rate Dior over Chanel currently, based on the quality of the leather and the craftsmanship.

Also, Delvaux. Lesser known, but the oldest fine leather house in the world. Impeccable quality leathers and craftsmanship.

Would you mind sharing where you got your pre owned from? I’m after a Chanel bag (& a Bottega Veneta) but like most of us can’t bear to pay £8K and wishing I’d bit the bullet when they were more affordable. I want something classic and good quality that’s not so expensive you’re afraid to take it out.

I’ve tried Farfetch, vestiare and a few others but would love a recommendation.

Check out just a little luxury for ladies and gentlemen on Facebook. Ebi Kas is the seller, highly recommended.

Try NPN Bags (closed until January but worth the wait as the lady who runs it is amazing and her standards are very high in terms of condition) or some of the bag selling groups on Facebook - ‘The WOC Lounge’ is particularly good for preowned Chanel. Good luck and hope you find something lovely!

I’m a woccer too, great group.

Nw22 · 08/11/2023 07:13

@shinny luxury promise. Sabrina is great and they can source you something if they don’t have the exact one you want.
sellier Knightsbridge can be more expensive but I have sold a couple of bags with them.

shinny · 08/11/2023 07:31

OMG Luxury Promise is fantastic! I think I’m going to get a Chanel from there and maybe consider a BN Bottega.
Thanks so much for the tips!! 🥰

Toefingers · 08/11/2023 08:00

It’s quite cheap, when you think a Hermes Birkin retails for £30-40k!

Andoltely bonkers. Even if I had the money I wouldn’t waste it on a bag. The message of I have what most people can’t afford is what they’re paying for imo

Are you the new Xenia?!

🤣🤣 The funny thing is that, given her supposed excellent education at a private school, her grammar and spelling leaves a lot to be desired!

Bottega’s quality is exceptional. I’d personally recommend the Andiamo. It’s a timeless design, and a workhorse of a bag. The Arco too. I wouldn’t go for the Jodie. It’s not the most versatile, and it’s a ‘trend’ bag imo.

Hermes can go for way more than that.

Or people buy what they like and can afford. Some people can afford more and spending on a Birkin is no different to them than someone on less spending on a Kate Spade, Coach or Radley.

I was watching Selling Sunset the other day (my guilty pleasure). And one of the woman walked into a house showing carrying this on her shoulder

So not even an actual bag! She even said "yeah I thought it was a bag but it's just a basketball". Why???? Talk about slave to fashion! Although I imagine (hope) she didn't actually pay for it.

A birkin can be 7k though, if you can get one in store

GreatShaker · 08/11/2023 10:40

Chanel announced this strategy a few years ago so it should not be a surprise. They were very open about their plans to raise prices.

The luxury market is not price sensitive. In fact it is the opposite. The more exclusive a product becomes the more people will pay. Money buys exclusivity.

Think your pricing may be a tad out of date! Even a 25 is almost £8k in "basic" leather, exotics much more!

Nw22 · 08/11/2023 11:34

@bettytaghetti true but I woudl never buy an exotic. I’m glad Chanel stopped making them.

wishingiwas20something · 08/11/2023 12:02

If I had the 8k hanging around, I probably would 😬

limefrog · 08/11/2023 12:26

To be honest £2k is well beyond the realms of what I think it would be reasonable to spend on a bag (for me), so whether it's £2k or £8k doesn't make much difference!

ItsRainingTacos79 · 08/11/2023 12:34

The leather quality has changed - I much preferred the soft lamb leather, nappa leather of the old bags. The newer ones feel cheap to touch.

Love a Chanel bag.

As I recall last year the classic had at least 3 price hikes, possibly 4. They’re definitely an investment.

They are only an investment if the price holds. If they go out of style the value will drop.

My mum held on to quite a few items (many, many) on the basis that they were expensive so had resale value. In fact when we cleared her house last year there was zero demand for her once expensive things. Most went to charity shops. It might be that when and if they come back into fashion the purchasers will make a nice profit on them but I didn't have the space or inclination to store them on the off chance that might happen.

Middleagedmeangirls · 08/11/2023 13:23

@MummyJ12

Apparently the cabbage practice is alive and well in some parts of the world. My DD bought some UGGs from China on eBay that are 100% identical to my many pairs of UGGs (apart from costing about 20% of what I paid). We went as far as scrutinising with mega pixel images and couldn't find a single point of difference.

I am assured that in parts of Turkey you can buy cabbage Mulberry bags for about £20. I hope so. I'm going there soon and while I like a Mulberry bag I am so pissed off with their lack of service that I would be happy to eat into their profits a little.

Missingmyusername · 08/11/2023 13:26

@notlucreziaborgia Didn’t say people shouldn’t buy them 😕at all. I said no bag costs that much and it doesn’t! I’d love to see the profit margin lol

This is really interesting, and I am sure that you’re right, it still goes on in other market areas. Ugg isn’t really high end though and even Mulberry is considered mid-market.
LVMH brands (Prada, Gucci and LV for example) are very protected from it. Chanel and Hermes have their own atelier sites and so there is zero chance of it.
Although Gabrielle Chanel was a big fan of licensing the Chanel brand in the early days and encouraged (and received payments) for Chanel being produced by subsidiaries for mass market, the company has been very careful about exclusivity since WW2.
There’s an interesting research paper from the University of Huddersfield about the cabbage practice in the fashion industry which explains it all really well.

MummyJ12 · 08/11/2023 14:19

Also, I would be very careful about the Mulberry bags from Turkey, they sound more likely to be counterfeit to me, especially at such a low price point. I don’t know about the production at Mulberry, and if they have sites that produce for them in Turkey but I doubt they’ll be cabbage as the leather and hardware will be worth more than the £20 cost of the bag. If they don’t have a production site nearby then it definitely wouldn’t be cabbage. I’ve already made my feelings pretty clear on here about counterfeit!

shinny · 08/11/2023 14:21

notlucreziaborgia

now you’re making me second guess the Jodie…. I want it as a day bag but need to be able to put over my shoulder rather than only hold handles like the andiamo and arco. I’ve looked several times in BV but simply can’t decide and I also like the new range - hobo I think it’s called. Opinions are most welcome though!!
