So I have seen these lovely Chanel bags pop up on my instagram feed and I naively thought “ooh they are nice I wonder how much they are?” In my head I was thinking £2/3k my eyeballs almost fell out of my head when I saw they are OVER £8k!

https://www.chanel.com/gb/fashion/p/A01112Y0129594305/classic-handbag-lambskin/

wow just wow, I’d want a bodyguard out with me if I was flashing one of those!

I will have to think of something else for my Christmas list this year 😂

I treated myself to a large classic black leather quilted Aspinal handbag this year. They're in the £400-700 range, but beautifully made and similar looking to Chanel. Aspinal frequently have 20% off sales. I'd be too nervous carrying £8k of handbag on my arm outdoors.

I love the quilted Aspinal Lottie bag. It's often hyped as the "look for less" alternative to Chanel, but I actually prefer the Aspinal design.

MummyJ12 · 08/11/2023 21:17

Beautiful bag @Isabelle70 the grained calfskin (caviar) leather was a great choice too.

Mulberry do have a manufacturing base in Turkey.
I’ve seen a colleague’s knock off bags from Turkey. You can see they are fake a mile off.

I have family in Turkey, and there are definitely different levels of knock off bags. Even in my hey day of caring about bags, which was I suppose the 2000s ish, there was no way in hell you would get a decent knock off bag for the equivalent of £20.

In the town close to my family member’s house, there were shops that you could go into from the street, and the guys there would tell you “it’s a good copy” (fake) - they would still be nice leather though and some of the e.g. Chloes and Mulberrys were pretty good. Miu miu was a big thing back then I recall.

Then there was another “shop” that you had to go into via an unmarked stairway where the really good stuff was. I suspect this was the cabbage that people are talking about- every single lining, piece of hardware, press stud everything identical to real. But not £20! Maybe £60 / £80 and bear in mind the retail costs back then were only around £1k ish for a lot of top end bags.

I never bought much as I didn’t like the idea of fake bags but I did have one Mulberry that was super good quality and lasted years.

Went to check my bag after reading this thread when I got home. Black lambskin with gold hardware/chain. In very good condition.

Still got the receipt, packaging, dust bag, ribbon, card and all that.

Checked the receipt - I actually bought it in 2006 and paid £890.00 for it!!! Ducking hell that means they are now almost ten times the price they were then. That's crazy!

Cannot believe that 😮

Wow! What a price rise. Handbags - along with watches - often come up as one of the purchases which holds their value. It used to be the Birkin or Kelly bags that were deliberately priced to make then unaffordable to most people but now it seems to be standard.

Couldn’t agree more.

I completely agree with this too, nothing wrong with not being able to / not wanting to spend money on an expensive brand but buying a fake imo is completely pointless, just buy something from a more affordable brand.

DyslexicPoster · 08/11/2023 22:19

I think I'd rather get one second hand but some don't seem to loose much in price. I'm not in the market for a 8k bag so what do I know.

I find with bags I'm totally fixated on internal pockets and organisation now for everyday bags. I have one high end designer bag that I bought I Century 21 in New York years ago for a bargain price. But no where to use it now.

I also had an amazing fake Chloe bag from Thailand once, lovely soft leather.

I've been known to pay for so-called quality. Please accept my apologies if there are people here, especially during times of trouble who can even contemplate carrying thousands of dollars/pounds worth on a bag holding their get me a to a toilet to scrub up on overpriced no better than if not worse than the cheapest products around. 🤷‍♀️ It probably shows🤦‍♀️

I ran that through google translate and I’m still none the wiser.

I was shocked to know they were about £800 in 1989 when I bought a hooky one in Singapore for about £40..the gold wore off eventually but it was beautiful leather.
Remember the perfume shop was not allowed to stock their perfumes because they wanted to be 'exclusive)

I was coming on to say I bought a really really good (and quite expensive, relatively) fake in Hong Kong... in 1989! I don't know what I did with it, and am now very disappointed it's gone.

Cnon · 09/11/2023 05:31

I'm in the USA and that's 10,479.266 US Dollars

Ekkkkkkkkk!

It's more like 5.5 times the price with inflation. £890 in 2006 is worth about £1432 now.

Meanwhile there a people who can't feed their children. This world is so fucking warped.

Comments like these on threads like this make little sense to me. As I said in my post earlier I’ve saved my little bum off for years to buy myself something nice and I give to several charities monthly.
But what, in your mind there are people worse off than me so I shouldn’t buy anything ever?
What would you have people do? Never buy anything because someone else can’t? That makes zero sense.

You’ve come on a thread discussing Chanel, what did you expect? People are discussing luxury purchases.

Ykn · 09/11/2023 10:20

Who on earth has £8k to spend on a bag other than the very rich? Confused

PumpkinsAndCoconuts · 09/11/2023 10:41

Divebar2021 · 07/11/2023 16:23

I don’t actually know where I’d go to carry it. When I go to the theatre / restaurants etc it’s not that dressy anymore ( in London that is).

I just don´t find it (visually) appealing. I am aware that some people will claim reverse snobbery.

But I honestly would not spend £100 on it. And definitely not thousands...

I am however thinking of buying a - much more affordable and ime much prettier! - tusting bag. Not too sure about these seasons colour options but the quality is great.

Bloomingmagnolia · 09/11/2023 11:38

I have a classic Chanel, and it is beautiful, no doubt. Sadly, it sits in its box as I’m too frightened to take it out in public for fear of being mugged.

That makes sense, but still a massive price rise.

Personally am drooling over the River Island ones and not even slightly interested in the Chanel.

Check out just a little luxury for ladies and gentlemen on Facebook. Ebi Kas is the seller, highly recommended.

Personally I wouldn’t recommend ebi kas as a business seller she should accept PayPal and returns but only accepts bank transfers and no returns. Also she’s been mentioned a couple of times on the safeguarding hideaway group so I would be cautious if using her. Best to stick to somewhere that accepts returns and not bank transfers, handbag clinic , npn swan, addicted to handbags etc .
happy shopping

Schmoana · 09/11/2023 17:11

Looks like something my old granny would carry 🙄

I’ve seen a few posts about her taking ages to send payments when selling your item and also only bank transfer a lot don’t like as no protection, a few other issues too best to join that safeguard group if your on fb they are good on there tell you who to avoid etc

iloveburmese3 · 09/11/2023 18:32

Loe Celine bags. Better leather and quality of stitching and very very chic.
