So I have seen these lovely Chanel bags pop up on my instagram feed and I naively thought “ooh they are nice I wonder how much they are?” In my head I was thinking £2/3k my eyeballs almost fell out of my head when I saw they are OVER £8k!

https://www.chanel.com/gb/fashion/p/A01112Y0129594305/classic-handbag-lambskin/

wow just wow, I’d want a bodyguard out with me if I was flashing one of those!

I will have to think of something else for my Christmas list this year 😂

That is the point, the luxury market is not aimed at the average person.

Loads of very average people spend a lot on handbags though. It’s like when you drive past cheap (ish) houses but the car is ££££

Said no one that actually has one in real life!

It clearly is nothing like something you could buy in Primark. That's just nonsense.

I think there's a valid conversation about the difference between expensive clothes being expensive for a good reason (e.g quality of materials and workmanship, skilled, artisan workers in UK or EU or US being paid fair wages, hand sewn couture items) or being expensive just because the manufacturer is creating an exclusive market.

I think things like say Max Mara coats or clothes from the Row or made to order couture are only in the first category but Chanel bags might be in the first but have elements of the second.

Well, of course. Nobody's going to say "yes, I spent £8k on a bag, but I now recognise that it's just nicely put together but extortionate pieces of leather and the money would have been better spent on a new kitchen".

Someone who has one in real life has to maintain a belief that it's worth it. Otherwise the cognitive dissonance would be unbearable.

Yes the whole concept relies on emperors new clothes with a massive dose of snobbery. It's just a way to recognise other rich people to decide if they are worth talking to.

Lovethatforyouhun · 07/11/2023 19:44

You cannot find a decent leather bag in Primark ffs lol
Stop putting down people who spend on fashion on a style board!
No one blinks an eye when men buy watches, cars or golf clubs!
After all 1k car gets you to the same place as a 20k or 200k car does.
People sleep for 8 hours (if lucky) in a mansion or a studio flat.
I’m sure people spending 10k on a bag have a decent kitchen!

That said, the prices are bloody nuts now. I bought a bag in 2020…its doubled in price and has messed up my house insurance premiums. If I sell I will make a 90% profit!
Its very tempting.

Even entry level designer bags like the LV pochette accessories is silly money now. The days of saving up for something special from Chanel etc are beyond me and the average person these days. Luckily there are lots of good mid range brands 😍

I have major issues with counterfeit products. The majority of which funds organised crime and are made in sweat shops using modern slavery.
If you can’t afford the real thing then buy something else, there’s plenty of choice without buying counterfeit.

Also, if you think that people can’t tell the difference, you’re wrong. They look cheap.

Couldn’t agree more.

LoveYouHoneyBadger · 07/11/2023 19:47

@WowIlikereallyhateyou I don't want an 8k bag even if I had the money . Its utterly senseless. A bag is trivial. Its sad that someone thinks a handbag has value

Sonkolon · 07/11/2023 19:47

EmmaGrundyForPM · 07/11/2023 19:35

With all due respect, £2k for a bag is not achievable for the average person.

I think I have a reasonable salary and there is no way I could justify £2k for a bag

Depends what you want to spend your £2,000 on. That's not a ridiculous amount for a holiday but on a choice between £2,000 on a holiday or a fabulous piece of clothing , I'd take the clothing ( just not a bag)

1AnotherOne · 07/11/2023 19:47

I bought mine in 2009 for £1400 and thought it extortionate then. The price leaps are insane, if I were to sell I’d make a tidy profit

Goodness.

I have a bag in excess of £8k ( for my 40th ) and a stunning kitchen fitted last year. Also FYI, I was on the extensions board here and kitchens were averaging £30k

When I am free of private fees in the summer when my youngest finishes his A levels, and my eldest is done with Uni, so more disposable income, I will prob treat myself to some jewellry and a bag or two!

I don't have to maintain any beliefs. I've worked hard, I've been fortunate, I can afford it.

Lovethatforyouhun · 07/11/2023 19:49

@LoveYouHoneyBadger

Fancy kitchens are trivial to some people too hun.
So all fashion and art is trivial to you, but luckily we aren’t all the same.

Great to hear your opinion, but it isn’t for you to decide whether other people are “sad” or not for what they choose to buy.

You're 100% correct about why buying counterfeits is morally reprehensible.

You are a snob who will only speak to other Birkin carriers…apparently. You are also very shallow, flashy and nouveau. 😂
Unless you wear 30 year old rags from White Stuff, Joules or Seasalt you are trashy.

crumblingschools · 07/11/2023 19:53

Have Chanel workers’ salaries gone up in line with the huge price hikes? Are their staff treated well?

safetyzone · 07/11/2023 19:53

Oh no as expected the frugal judgey people have descended!

However, I think Chanel's price increase is really cynical and doesn't have the quality to match. Didn't think it was worth it when it was 5k, and that was only 5-6 years ago!

Nope, wear mostly Zimmermann, Christopher Kane and Tom Ford. Plenty of Massimo Dutti. Some Zara & Self Portrait. I'm 5'10, slim, and dress very well- Trashy doesn't even begin to feature.

As for Nouveau - I don't take that an insult. I'm a child of immigrants who struggled to send me to private school. I've been able to send my children to the best boarding schools and hopefully endowed them to be succesful. They are multi lingual, cultured and well rounded. My daughter has an offer of £52k waiting as she finishes Uni. They hopefully can sustain that and can in turn do better for their children. That's how generational wealth is built.

So possibly my grandchildren won't be nouveau.
Hope that helps

GlobetrottingPercy · 07/11/2023 20:01

It is a shame that people can’t just think ‘wow, I would never spend £8k on a bag and so this isn’t the thread for me’ and just scroll on by. You don’t see them on the multiples board randomly popping up on a thread about cars saying ‘well I would never have 4 children because I hate children, I have a fish instead’.

Agree that the price hikes are crazy and puts many bags out of reach that would have been affordable pre-Covid.

What are bench posters?

There was a thread quite some time ago where, IIRC, the OP had come into some money and was looking to buy a fancy bag. One anti bag poster said that she shouldn’t waste this money on a bag, she should buy a memorial bench. Can’t remember all of it, but it went on an bit and some posters got quite agitated! 🤣

PegasusReturns · 07/11/2023 20:10

Love a Chanel bag.

As I recall last year the classic had at least 3 price hikes, possibly 4. They’re definitely an investment.

Incredibly well. Chanel invests years of training into their artisans so they want to look after them. Chanel have also recently teamed up with the Prince’s Trust to nurture talent and so some investment is coming back into this country, unlike counterfeit products.
Even the Chanel Sales Associates are treated well and so the turnover of “workers” is very low. They retain their team as they don’t want their talent and knowledge going elsewhere. Especially those in the ateliers.

Vintagevixen · 07/11/2023 20:15

God I never realised they stopped with the proper gold plating in 2008 - mine was pre that so must have proper plating. I've hardly used it either because I had a baby soon after and it was all nappy bags from then on.

Perhaps I should sell it to fund my ongoing roof work!!!
