So I have seen these lovely Chanel bags pop up on my instagram feed and I naively thought “ooh they are nice I wonder how much they are?” In my head I was thinking £2/3k my eyeballs almost fell out of my head when I saw they are OVER £8k!

wow just wow, I’d want a bodyguard out with me if I was flashing one of those!

I will have to think of something else for my Christmas list this year 😂

Out of curiosity, what do you posters do for a living to be able to think about buying even a 2/3K bag?! High paying jobs? Family money? Genuinely curious! It's so interesting how we all live such different lives and spend our money on different things :)

None of these. I work part time and we are comfortable but not well off. I save a little every month and have been for the past few years. I save for Christmas, birthdays and I have a pot for me. It’s a big birthday for me next year and I plan to treat myself to something I have wanted for a long time. It’ll likely see very little day light but I can’t wait.
These savings are separate to family savings so my children won’t go without because I am making this purchase. It may seem daft to some people and no doubt I may regret it but I’ve always wanted to go and buy a designer bag.
Never been into clothes or shoes, I don’t get my hair done very often or spend money on Botox etc but handbags have always been a love of mine and I’ve never had a designer one before. I’ve made a lot of sacrifices work wise to raise my children and be the primary parent - I deserve a nice treat!

Also, I would be very careful about the Mulberry bags from Turkey, they sound more likely to be counterfeit to me, especially at such a low price point. I don’t know about the production at Mulberry, and if they have sites that produce for them in Turkey but I doubt they’ll be cabbage as the leather and hardware will be worth more than the £20 cost of the bag. If they don’t have a production site nearby then it definitely wouldn’t be cabbage. I’ve already made my feelings pretty clear on here about counterfeit!

Mulberry do have a manufacturing base in Turkey.
I’ve seen a colleague’s knock off bags from Turkey. You can see they are fake a mile off.

Relatively high paying job. Not quite 6 figures but not far off.

heyhohello · 08/11/2023 15:36

It figures. I don't have as much disposable income. I still treat myself to nice bags, jewellery etc so don't feel hard done to because I like what I have. I did find a good market stall selling handmade leather goods. All full grain leather. Not particularly expensive. I got a belt but they had some nice bags for around £60 IIRC.

I get paid £1 every time someone on mumsnet gets butthurt over what strangers spend their own money on. It adds up quickly.

Painto · 08/11/2023 16:09

AHelpfulHand · 07/11/2023 13:59

Surely hardly anyone will pay that?

They can just use cheap materials and make the money back 10 fold anyway 😐

I'd rather pay to have a good quality leather handbag from somewhere independent. People seriously have more money than sense but there you go

Same for the "more money than sense" comments 🙄

Cry me a river. If I want to have a conversation where nobody is allowed an opinion then off you pop to talk to yourself🙄

Boring

You are implying that people that spend more than you would on a handbag lack commonsense ...really boring!

As if the need for some to tell us they wouldn’t spend their money on it/think it’s wrong to spend money on it/are virtuously frugal/can find just as good at primark constitutes a riveting contribution 😂

and yes, apparently it’s really very important that we’re made aware of any/all of the above.

I love a good bag, have had some great discussions over the years on here about them. I even did an unboxing thread once. There were the haters but not so many as now.

Would love this, much better than all the paid for influencer unboxing that we get these days!

Wow! I bought mine which is virtually identical in about 2003 for just over £1000 in Selfridges. That's a massive leap up in price.

Mine was £1500 in 2009 I thought our prices were bad enough !

queenofarles · 08/11/2023 17:00

Im a big chanel fan, have been buying since late teens, but I wouldnt spend that much on Classic double flap leather , although I do like their double flap tweed and beaded bags and think much more work goes into them than the leather bags.

and I’m not buying any Hermes from now on, not because of their price increase but due to their new pre spend quota system, I used to just fill a wish list and 4-5 months later I’d get my bag , sometimes I’d walk into any small store and I will be offered one with no pre spend , now it seems it’s only catering to tiktokers and people willing to spend ££££ on jewellery to get a bag , it’s madness.!

HedonistHuntress · 08/11/2023 18:06

Chanelbagowner · 07/11/2023 21:17

For anyone buying from an auction, familiarise yourself with auction language which subtly indicates if they think the bag is genuine or not. ‘In the style of’ or ‘inspired by’ are good examples. Generally owners of genuine bags don’t throw away the packaging or serial number cards. If it looks too good to be true, it probably is!

God - I’ve got multiple Chanel (and others - Dior, Gucci, Prada, LV) bags and binned all the big boxes as soon as I got home as the shelves I had made for my bags couldn’t fit them on in a box. I keep the dust bags because they’re stored in their dust bags and I have acid free tissue paper that I stuff in them to keep their shape and I possibly have the authenticity card (for Chanel only I think - I don’t think I remember a Prada one?) in a side pocket or a middle pocket but I DEFINITELY didn’t keep the packaging. I didn’t buy stuff to flog it later, just to love and admire…

Good reason to never sell should my DH want a contribution to the garden landscaping or whatever.

Vintagevixen · 08/11/2023 18:22

Went to check my bag after reading this thread when I got home. Black lambskin with gold hardware/chain. In very good condition.

Still got the receipt, packaging, dust bag, ribbon, card and all that.

Checked the receipt - I actually bought it in 2006 and paid £890.00 for it!!! Ducking hell that means they are now almost ten times the price they were then. That's crazy!

Cannot believe that 😮

Vintagevixen · 08/11/2023 18:27

Wish I had bought another one now and maxed out my credit card - that was in pre-motherhood days when I could afford a few luxuries!

coxesorangepippin · 08/11/2023 18:34

Indeed. If you have to look at the price, you can't afford it.

^^

That old chestnut again

Isabelle70 · 08/11/2023 18:36

In my mind I was going to treat myself to a Chanel bag at retirement which hopefully will be in 7 years. But after looking at the price increases for the last couple of years I decided to purchase my Chanel boy bag now. I got it in September and it means I can use it for the next god knows how many years so a better cost per wear 😃
