Honest opinion on these hair styles please

I’m 50 and my shoulder length hair is thin and stringy. It’s almost all one length and it’s boring and flat. I have a natural wave that tends to flick up and out and I’ve had my hair like the pictures in the past but not sure if it’s now dated.

I like what Kate Silverton used to have - lots of layers and flicks up at the back. I used to use a hot brush to get lift and the crown and sides and the sides and back used to be cute and flick out due to the natural curl in my hair. Is it too dated now though? I detest the use of ‘Karen’ to describe these looks but I don’t want anything that is obviously 10 years out of date.

any thoughts please?

Go to a stylist who can cut hair with a natural wave, which you have been doing in the past. Explain what you'd like and see what they suggest.

I don't think the K word should be used. Say you don't want it in an inverted bob.

Pigeonqueen · 06/11/2023 22:20

I’m going to be really honest and say those look really dated to me. I think the most popular look at the moment is a modern mullet - I’m not saying you should go for that but the style is more layered from the top, not from the bottom. If you like those styles you’ve posted it wouldn’t take much at all to do an updated version. Just more of a shaggier shape.

PosyPrettyToes · 06/11/2023 22:23

It’s very dated, I’m afraid - very much a “speak to the manager” haircut.

Janieforever · 06/11/2023 22:24

Sorry op I’m about your age and they are very dated to me too.

Loubelle70 · 06/11/2023 22:26

Can someone post a pic of a layered sleek bob or a modern mullet? I'm seeing a mad range of styles described as either when I search.

Ah thanks pigeonqueen

FayCarew · 06/11/2023 22:33

@Somanycats , the first might be something like Taylor Swift, the second look for 'wolf cut'

I've never seen anyone with hair like this.

Nearly all the 40+ women in my office have either one or the other cut in the first two pictures. Only two others with very long thick hair straight cut in pony tails.

whatt2do · 06/11/2023 22:45

Another shout out for the modern mullet or if you prefer slightly shorter at the back a shag. These are the photos I took in to my hairdresser for inspiration for mine but my hair is very fine and no wave at all. Pinterest Modern Mullet or Shag and you'll get more options.

AuntieJoyce · 06/11/2023 22:58

I think it would look better a bit longer. I am going for something like this soon and I am a little bit older than you

I don't see it as dated at all!

They're all much the same!

CryptoFascist · 06/11/2023 23:55

No, please don't, these are more like 20 years out of date.
The suggestions from the posters on this thread are much more current.
Of the 50+ women I know, they either have long bobs with wavy layers or shaggy cuts with a lot of well blended highlights. The chunky highlights in the darker cut you posted are also very dated looking.

Hmm, but, don't a lot of the modern mullet/shag photos being posted only work because models are wearing them? I can't help thinking that on a normal looking slightly dumpy 50-something (me not you OP!) they'd look like a previously structured hairstyle which was now 6 months past-due for a haircut. Going against the grain I know but don't be a fashion victim OP, go for what suits you not what's trendy

IAmtheVampiresWife · 07/11/2023 03:03

@Hairtodays they both look like wigs for some reason.
