What are they?

I'm still stuck in the skinny jeans and Breton stripe rut and haven't bought new clothes for about 5 years. I'll have a bit of spare cash from this month on so want to update my style to be more current.

Would love some inspiration! Size 12 with a mum tum but enough about me. What would you buy?

Ooh what a great thread!

I am a coataholic so probably a good wool-mix classic coat - I saw a lovely long navy funnel neck one with two patch pockets in M&S recently.

Some comfortable flattering Mom jeans - I have some but there's not quite perfect, so always looking. I also need some wide-leg jeans that are just the right length without being actually cropped.

I'd also like some tapered cords, and some tailored wide-leg work (more formal) trousers.

Knitwear-wise I'm not usually.a big cardigan fan but there's some really nice cropped chunky cardigans around with a really modern silhouette.

Dress-wise, I'm at sea - very sick of floral midis but haven't found the next thing that suits me, although I quite like a shirt dress or a knitted dress.

I could do with some new trainers - I like the New Balance 527, probably in black.

Some great inspiration here thank you @DiamandaTheGreat

Reading your reply makes me realise how much is just about having a more fashionable silhouette- wide leg rather than skinny, cropped cardigans rather than long ones that cover my (not inconsiderable) bottom.

Off to look at tapered cords!

10 is a lot, but depends where you are starting from I guess! (And your lifestyle, and how “on trend” you want to be…)

  1. Jeans (straight leg or wide leg)
  2. Something corduroy or velvet
  3. chunky gold earrings (could be hoops or studs)
  4. Crossbody bag (uniqlo or Cos)
  5. trainers (depending on what you like, but can’t go too far wrong with new balance or vejas)
  6. something silver (could be boots, could be a party top!)
  7. a long coat (at least mid calf)
  8. something leather (blazer, mini skirt, trousers, cap)
  9. Good sunglasses as they can really update a look
  10. a chunky stripe jumper (could be a long turtleneck, could be cropped, could be half zip, etc.)
AzureBlue99 · 05/11/2023 18:34

I would like a navy pea coat.

Some cigarette style black jeans.

A black sleeveless wool tank top.

A cream cashmere slouchy jumper.

A tan crossbody bag.

A bright wool coat.

Some black clumpy boot.

Some black high heel loafers.

Some brown high heel loafers.

A navy blue cashmere beanie.

All quite boring but want to keep it all for a few years.

Seaside3 · 05/11/2023 18:47

I'd buy...

  1. Bootcut jeans
  2. White shirt
  3. Tapered trousers
  4. New Balance Trainers
  5. Gold boots
  6. Off the shoulder dress
  7. Snag tights
  8. Knitted jumper
  9. long skirt
10. New bag

I find it really helpful to make style boards. I have one in h & m, I don't need to buy everything from there, but it's good to see what I like and if.it goes together.

hurlyb · 05/11/2023 21:16

FAO the Esska-wishers...I have a pair of Charlie in onyx and whilst I like them on, they're bloomin heavy!

I agave a pair of lower, block-heel gold sandals en route from.Boden, hoping I'll be a bit lighter on my feet in those...

Callingallbutterflies · 05/11/2023 22:44

I have an ongoing list in my head. Something like...

Navy cashmere crew neck loose fitting jumper - so can be worn with a shirt underneath or not.

The Russell & Bromley flat form laceless trainer in black

Navy wide leg trousers and/or darker jeans with a wider leg than I am currently wearing.

Buttonless navy or camel lightweight wool, mid calf coat (to wear with trousers and over workdresses and with jeans with my many bretons)

Long sleeve wrap dress in black... Mid calf and with pockets

Nike joggers

Longline cashmere edge to edge cardigan, perhaps dark grey

Heavy silver statement necklace

Navy Goodr sunglasses - regular non fancy shape

Wedge heel, round toe ankle boots

I need time and a bit more money, but at least I have written a list down now. Thanks OP.

evryevrytime · 06/11/2023 07:33

I love these lists! Really beautiful ideas on here. I'm thinking I need some silver in my wardrobe and wider leg jeans as a starting point. It's giving 90s.

I do have an APC demi lune @Nospecialcharactersplease and they really stand the test of time, I got mine years ago and still use it most days. I'd recommend the grained leather rather than smooth if you want it to look decent for a while.

I've bought most of my autumn/winter wardrobe from Vinted or picked things up in charity shops but still on my list is:

A long light grey coat
The perfect mid calf leather/pleather boot
Hollister straight leg jeans (have the Dad jeans and they are the only brand that fit me perfectly on the waist)
Dress trousers in black (pleated front), maybe Hollister Livvy pants
Another pair of Snag tights
Charcoal oversized jumper
Full length cardigan
New scarf
Front fastening bra in black
New PJ's

I'm leaning towards charcoal rather than black, and grey rather than camel this year as I am cool toned, and they look better against my skin.

Floisme · 06/11/2023 14:18

There aren't 10 things but I think I could do with modernising my shoes. I'm fine for boots and clompy, stompy Dr Martens etc - and I don't want trainers - but my smarter / going out shoes are feeling a bit tired, especially if I want to wear a skirt for a change.

I keep seeing pics of interesting flats and thinking I must take advantage before fashion moves on. The problem is that shoes aren't particularly my thing so I'm constantly getting distracted and spending my cash on something else.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 06/11/2023 17:32

I've bought:

  • a new black All Saints leather jacket, slightly oversized
  • a sequin jacket for wearing with jeans in the run up to Christmas
  • 2 Whistles print dresses, just over the knee
  • a printed blouse from M&S
  • a black waistcoat
  • a grey knitted midi skirt
  • a huge black Zara scarf
I'd like:
  • a slouchy grey jumper or cardigan
  • some slouchy grey trousers
  • a black blouse with a pussy bow

Not sure if any of these are 'updates' but they're what I like/would like! Oh and I need a new faux leather or leather pencil skirt but can't find one I like enough.

erikbloodaxe · 06/11/2023 18:04

9 pairs of knickers and a Brocade coat.

Vinoveritass · 06/11/2023 18:08

A leather biker
A navy pea coat
Perfect wide leg trousers - tricky as I'm petite and they so far don't look right
A grey jumper
A nude/ecru knit jumper
A new bag- not sure on style!

Cantonet · 06/11/2023 20:39

RazorstormUnicorn · 07/11/2023 17:27

I am kind of doing this as I realised a lot of my wardrobe is very practical (waterproof or down coat, kanken back pack, waterproof boots) and I wanted to attempt to be more stylish if I go out with DH or friends and less like I am hill walking. (Unless I am actually hill walking!)

Purchased from Vinted

  1. All Saints leather tote hand bag big enough for water bottle and snacks
  2. Striped jumper from M&S
  3. DVF blue/black wrap dress which is gorgeous and looks great even though I am a bit heavier than usual right now
  4. All saints part vest/part sheer body for nights out

Still to purchase/requested for Christmas

  1. A studded leather belt
  2. Really big chunky scarf
  3. Grey/black wide jeans (I'm so pleased these are back!)
  4. Low heel slightly western pull on boots
  5. Above the knee black skirt, seen a nice one on M&S website
10. A big chunky knit for contrast, all my stuff is quite fitted

I'd also quite like fake leather leggings, I do have a pair purchased earlier this year but they don't currently fit and probably won't this winter if I am honest. They'll only fit next winter if I actually find it in myself to make an effort....

BestIsWest · 07/11/2023 22:05

I want
Oxblood Doc Chelsea boots.
Fair Isle Cardi (Seasalt have one I like)
Boxy cashmere jumper, charcoal grey or black
Wide leg jeans.
Cord blazer in green or blue.
Denim pinafore from Toast.

I also have a hankering after a fair isle tank top but will not give in.
I’d love a silver skirt or leather look leggings but know they would sit unworn in my wardrobe.
