If I wash my Levi jeans at 40° will I regret it?

I treated myself to some lovely Levi jeans. They fit brilliantly around the waist and bum but go baggy at the knee after a couple of wears. The label says to wash at 30° but I'm tempted to go to 40° and see if that does anything at all to improve the slight bag. Will I regret it? Will it even do anything?!

The labels say 30°C primarily for environmental reasons. Everything gets washed at 40°C here. It is very rare that anything dies and certainly not a pair of jeans! Those get washed at 60°C if filthy.

I don't think you'll damage them, but if they're denim/cotton (ie no elastane) it may work for the first wear afterwards, but then they'll be back to how they were. If I'm remembering rightly I think the Levi CEO said you should just rinse them out, and only wash after many wears.

They will be more fitted when you put them on but will get more baggy again as you wear them. Mine do the same.

Doggymummar · 02/11/2023 21:49

It's recommended you put them in the freezer rather than wash them I think.

Mine got tighter all over after washing them, gutted as it took me a while to break them in.

It won’t harm them but it won’t fix sagging. Are they skinny jeans?

They're "Ribcage Ankle Straight...."

They look and feel great when they've just been washed, but once they're 'worn in' the bagginess around the knee really bothers me!

Thank you all. No surprises with anything anyone's said (except maybe the freezer comment. Is that REALLY a thing?!)

If the jeans are 100% cotton, they will always bag at the knees. Re the freezing, freezing kills the bacteria (bacteria causes clothing to smell). So if the jeans look clean but smell, freezing is recommended. Fewer washes means the jeans stay looking new for longer.

I watched a consumer programme once and am pretty sure it found Levis shrink more than other brands.

Levi’s are only supposed to be washed every 10 wears.
I’m sure I heard Levi’s have a seamstress type thing In store or something and you can always take them In to be altered if needed.

Galiana · 03/11/2023 02:43

I wear selvedge denim and it doesn't bag or grow.

What's the composition of your Levi denim OP?

Galiana · 03/11/2023 02:47

I guess they have a % of lycra in so they stretch.

If they contain lycra, they will always stretch. A 40° wash won't shrink them

If you want well-fitting jeans, go for a 100% cotton and buy them a bit small.

Also buy premium denim, the weave grows to fit rather than stretches to accommodate.

I wash mine at 40 or 30 depending what else is in the wash load.

When newly washed, l have to lay down to put them on, a couple of hours later, l’m out and about and regretting not wearing a belt.

l neither want to put my jeans in the freezer nor avoid washing them for long periods. I like things clean.

Hold on, I’m just going back to my wardrobe to change into one if my dresses. Comfort and simplicity 😀.
