Find me a dress (black tie)

I need help desperately!

Black tie event in a few weeks time. Am also required to wear black as that is the theme.

I had a baby a few months ago and I feel totally lost style wise, I also never go to formal events so I'd probably be lost anyway.

I'm early thirties, average height and a size 8-10. I have a largish busy (32DD), but I'm pretty straight up and down otherwise.

Budget is up to £200. But would like to spend less if possible as I'm on mat leave.

What would you wear? Hoping someone can help.

I love this one.. it can be easily dressed up but it's not a poofy ball gown so you can get wear out of it after.

Would this jumpsuit work? https://www.theoutnet.com/shop/product/halston/jumpsuits/evening/strapless-draped-crepe-wide-leg-jumpsuit/1647597302449857

or there is a long sleeve wrap dress which I definitely would have gone for in the year after giving birth..

This would go to £20O if you spend an additional £10 and then you’d be able to use the discount code. https://www.anthropologie.com/en-gb/shop/pilcro-strapless-detachable-tulle-lace-midi-dress?category=party-dresses&color=001&type=REGULAR&quantity=1

Isn't black tie floor length. Or is that white tie?

I would say floor length is only required for white tie.

Black tie is slightly less formal, so a shorter dress or dressy trousers are usually okay. Also, any colour bow tie for men, except white.

Others will disagree, though.

hotcandle · 02/11/2023 12:18

Black tie is a floor length dress. A shorter dress or dressy trousers is not considered black tie.

minipie · 02/11/2023 12:26

For a winter do I would go with a jumpsuit or maxi dress purely to avoid the tights nonsense. Also you can wear smart boots with a jumpsuit, comfier than heels
if there will be lots of standing up.

You can dress

cowl neck black jumpsuit

v neck jumpsuit

if strapless bra is ok

In theory yes but I’ve been to a few supposedly black tie events in the past few years and it’s definitely been more informal than I expected. Very few full length dresses.

sleepwhenidie · 02/11/2023 12:31

I’ve been to lots of corporate black tie things and a shorter dress would have been fine at any of them be fine at any of them.

I have the Somerset maxi velvet dress in dark blue and it is gorgeous. Not very formal but you could probably just about get away with it-bonus is it is a great dress for Xmas parties/evenings out/xmas day and is super comfortable.

hotcandle · 02/11/2023 12:31

@minipie I think there is so much confusion around the rules many people do something different. However, the 'rules' of black tie are a floor length dress.

In reality, there are so many gorgeous dresses out there I don't blame people for going rouge.

That is absolutely gorgeous.

babyg23 · 02/11/2023 14:59

Ah thanks all! I had given up on getting any answers Smile

Other ladies that I know to be attending are all wearing floor length gowns.

The sister Jane one is probably my favourite out of those, plus the tulle one from anthropologie.

The sister Jane one looks more like something I'd wear in the day or to a nice meal though and not what I had in my head for black tie.
