Wearing black to a winter wedding?

Mushroo · 01/11/2023 15:11

I know the general consensus is not to wear black to a wedding but I have a family wedding in December and I’ll be 37 weeks pregnant so I’m struggling to find anything that will fit!

I also have a Xmas night out the week before so hoping to kill 2 birds with one stone, without spending much more than £50.

Will this be ok do you think? https://www.newlook.com/uk/womens/clothing/dresses/maternity-black-velvet-twist-front-midi-dress/p/882424901?_cclid=Google_CjwKCAjw7oeqBhBwEiwALyHLM9esKjmiTIk-vTrh9sybj1YJXG5oN7KQG337oqO4ASngCCHyQvEWJBoC3XMQAvD_BwE&extcam=UK_PPC_PMax_Generics_Priority_Google_DV_m_AGID__PRID_8824303&gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw7oeqBhBwEiwALyHLM9esKjmiTIk-vTrh9sybj1YJXG5oN7KQG337oqO4ASngCCHyQvEWJBoC3XMQAvD_BwE

Other suggestions welcome! :)

Honestly . It's a nice dress but rather funereal for both a festive night and a wedding. What about something in red or purple or patterned?

DuploTrain · 01/11/2023 15:16

I’d usually say no black, but at 37 weeks people will probably be marvelling that you’re there and hoping you don’t go into labour rather than judging your outfit.

Might be worth having a look on Vinted though… lots of dressy maternity dresses only get worn once or twice.

Whataretheodds · 01/11/2023 15:18

No, it's not appropriate.

You can pick up something suitable on Vinted for not much, and sell it on when you're done.

Crikeyisthatthetime · 01/11/2023 15:19

I wore black to recent weddings, wasn't the only one either. It's much less of a "thing" now and if it makes you worry less you can accessorize with a colour (the cream furry jacket in your link looks amazing). I've worn fuschia with it, and a blush pink/creamy colour too.
It's a lovely dress.

Aixellency · 01/11/2023 15:19

At that price it will be incredibly thin and probably not very nice to wear.

If you do Vinted you could look for something pre-owned, BNWT, from.

I also think it’s fine. My mum wore black to my wedding and she looked amazing. You can add accessories to make it dressier etc

DuploTrain · 01/11/2023 15:21

Try searching for Club L maternity on vinted

Mrsjayy · 01/11/2023 15:21

I think no black is less of a thing now . Can you get a colourful bag and maybe shawl to brighten it up. At 37 weeks they will just be pleased you are there.

Nonplusultra · 01/11/2023 15:23

I’d be delighted you came, and not worried about what you wore.

Mushroo · 01/11/2023 15:29

Yes, I definitely wouldn’t normally go for black but hoping people will just be impressed I turned up. (Also aware there’s a risk I may not actually be able to go which is why the budget is so low!).

Club L is a good suggestion, would this be better and would it work without heels?

I know Vinted is a good option, but tbh I really struggle to ever find anything on there. I just get overwhelmed after one page of scrolling and give up.

That red one is lovely, perfect for Xmas party and wedding.

Love this one 💖

Doingmybest12 · 01/11/2023 15:51

I think the black one is lovely and you can dress it up or down. It is very sophisticated to me.

Monsteraescuelenta · 01/11/2023 15:56

It's nice but I prefer the berry red one for a winter wedding. That said, at 37 weeks preg, I really don't think it matters at all. They'll just be want you there and comfortable! Definitely wouldn't do black accessories with the black one if you do go for it.

SharonEllis · 01/11/2023 17:02

I think its fine. Honestly, who the hell criticises a pregnant woman's clothes? Dressed up with some jewellery, you'll look lovely. Time we put stupid rules about wedding clothes to bed.

It’s fine OP.

Totally this!

It's a lovely dress. People do wear black to weddings.

Put lovely jewellery or or coloured shoes with it and honestly you'll look fab.

Pumpkinini · 01/11/2023 21:58

Love the Berry dress. I do understand you probably don't feel like buying new stuff whilst pregnant. If you opt for black I wonder whether a grey, burgundy or patterned pashmina and fascinator would help break it up a little. Some burgundy shoes might be fabulous this time of the year too.

Mushroo · 01/11/2023 22:01

Thanks all - I think I might order both options and just hope one actually fits!

If I go for the black will definitely look
to brightly accessorise.
