What to wear to winter wedding

I’m at a total loss- have kind of lost my sense of “style” over the years and stick to the same old things.
Got a wedding At Christmas and was wondering if black is ok to wear? I’m in my 40s, size 12 and would normally stick to dresses. Hate my tummy area so nothing right around that. Not even sure what type of shoes are in fashion anymore. Any ideas would be gratefully received!

Black is fine if it’s not cheap / limp / faded and actually suits you!

Don’t know your budget or style but if you want something quiet and restrained

The Fold

has a number of lovely wedding worthy things. Not cheap but not ‘crazy designer prices’ either.

As for shoes - Mary Janes would be the most fashionable option; either flat or heeled.

The main question is how much you’re willing to spend. And the specifics of the wedding style and venue and your own role in the proceedings.

Last winter wedding I went to I wore icy blue with silver accessories and a white fake fur bolero. I felt like the Snow Queen (a good thing, IMO).

Black is so gloomy in winter, and makes the average British complexion look washed out and grey. What colours and styles do you like? Coloured trouser suits are having a moment right now, and would be warmer than a dress.

Oh just saw you prefer dresses. What colours do you like then? What's your budget?

I'm wearing this to a wedding next month. On sale in John Lewis. It's lovely! Hides my tummy well. I'm wearing gold heels and jewellery.

Oh, I got that one in red! Just need a Christmas party to wear it to!

I'm waiting for this to arrive, I really hope I like it on as I have 4 or 5 different things to go to this winter that it would work for. With thick tights and flat boots but I also think it's a dress than could be dressed up with heels for a winter wedding.

I could envisage you in this black velvet dress OP. Ruched to hide your tummy, long enough to be classy.

You could style it up with silver accessories.

Very Christmassy too and won't break the bank.

I would team that velvet dress with something like these shoes

I would avoid all black for a wedding. I'm in a lot of wedding planning groups on social media and every time someone posts about a guest turning up in black, there are loads of comments about how rude it is to do that. It's seen as being against the wedding /mourning at the idea of the couple getting married.

Thank you all- some great places to look at. The clothes in The Fold are beautiful but way out of my budget!
I forgot to mention a budget- would be up to £100.
I should have shoes that will go with any outfit as I hoarded them in my younger days (and can’t bear to throw any of them out!) and have lots of diff styles and colours- mind you- not sure if I would be able to walk in them these days!
My style these days revolves around jeans and t shirts so I’ve defin “lost” it at some stage and haven’t been to an event in years! At work I tend to wear dresses that I’ve had for quite a while. My go to colour would defin be dark- black, green or navy.
