Not keen on knitted dresses, are you?

I’ve seen a lot of knitted dresses online and in the shops. They are generally long and plain like a big jumper and I don’t think they would be flattering at all on me. Is anyone wearing them and what style/type/colour and what shoes/boots do you wear to go with them?

@GonnaGetGoingReturns I love your one. Very sixties.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 30/10/2023 16:26

I adore them.

If plain coloured, I will wear with a silk scarf or longer chunky beaded necklace, tights and either calf boots, ankle boots or loafers depending on how smart i have to be.

If they have block colour/pattern then just tights and shoes as above.

Sometimes I wear white shirts underneath them.

I never wear with leggings or trousers, never with knee high or over the knee boots. Rarely with anything on top, other than a jacket, always layer underneath.

I love them and have three!

All polo necks. One is merino and one is cashmere and don't itch. One is wool/merino blend and itches slightly but I wear a long sleeved t-shirt underneath.

All worn with knee-high boots and no belt. Two bought on Vinted (originally Cos and Semon, one in Fatface sale. Fatface one is my favourite.

I am tall, thin and straight though.

I think we are very similar.
Mine are also all polo neck. I live in them in the winter. I wear with shorter boots though.

I love jumper dresses so am up for spammed links please!

Papyrophile · 30/10/2023 16:41

I had a brilliant sweater dress in the mid-80s. Charcoal grey, real wool with a quarter zip neck and a full 3/4 circle skirt hitting at low mid calf. I am still looking for its sister. It was incredibly useful, for everything.

That’s lovely @GonnaGetGoingReturns

They had a moment over 10 years ago which is when I got into them. I’m skinny and cold and I live in them for casual wear in the winter as I work from home.

Uniqlo always does merino ones - I’ve got about 10 - but recently they’ve not been as nice as in the past. Celtic & co does them I’ve 3 of theirs. One from Seasalt, one from Woolvers and several cashmere ones from Yoox and Pure Collection.

If you’re petite - they need to be slim fitting and above the knee, some of mine are bodycon with elastene. The big chunky knit ones don’t work on me or the midi/midi long - you have to be tall for those.

Wolvesart · 30/10/2023 16:56

I’ve bought a rib knit one from Next. I didn’t expect it to be so flattering. I’m landing to wear it with ankle boots and long necklace

Mirabai · 30/10/2023 16:57

Celtic & Co selection

Select ‘wool’ to filter dresses.

I really don't like the chunky knit sweater dresses you can find, but I'm partial to a tight knit one.

I have a merino wool sweater dress from Hobbs that's a fine knit and absolutely so soft. Goes very well with either knee high boots or heeled ankle boots. This is a regular in my wardrobe.

Although I tried a different sweater dress on in UNIQLO over the summer and absolutely hated it, was an itchy material and was quite tight and not flattering at all. I think it really depends on the material and fit ultimately.

StillFanta · 30/10/2023 17:13

I love them (on other people) but they look horrific on Me! They cling to all the wrong places and make me look a lot bigger than I am, gutted as I love them with tights and boots!

Alltheyearround · 30/10/2023 17:23

I have one but only wear in the house. Its plum coloured and I love it.

A friend gave it me.

Snugglemonkey · 30/10/2023 19:14

I love them. I wear them every year. I have different styles etc and love them all. I cannot wear them this year due to breastfeeding and am not entirely sure how to get through the winter!

That’s lovely @GonnaGetGoingReturns

Thanks, it’s stretchy but warm and smart enough for work with navy blazer but can be dressed form and it’s surprisingly flattering and @Lentilweaver thanks too, it does have a sixties vibe.

NonMiDispiace · 30/10/2023 19:29

I’m itching just reading this thread- I love knitted dresses but I now find them too warm and I’m too lumpy/fat 🤷🏼‍♀️

Bedazzling · 30/10/2023 19:59

One of the loveliest dresses I ever owned was a French Connection knitted dress, navy blue with wide sleeved to the elbow and then a wide band at the back that could be tightened, had a slash neck. It was way back in the 1990’s.

I have a plum coloured one with some detailing on the shoulders and also a grey one that has a sort of sun burst of detailing on the yoke. I love them.

bendmeoverbackwards · 30/10/2023 20:04

@GonnaGetGoingReturns what’s the sizing like? I’m usually a 12 so prob a M?

JaceLancs · 30/10/2023 20:22

I love them and usually wear with opaque tights and either ankle or knee length boots depending on the length
I prefer fine knit and my favourites are from uniqlo, all saints and phase eight
must have about 10 in different colours - they are classic styles so bring them out every winter

hohumbumbum · 30/10/2023 20:44

I would disagree that you need to be tall for midi/longer dresses. I am 5 foot 1 and they suit me perfectly. I used to wear short things when I was younger, but I now prefer longer. I agree with you about the big chunky ones not working. I am slim and flat chested as well as being short, in case that's helpful to anyone else. I prefer them to be be merino, though some of mine have other things mixed in with the wool. My favourite merino ones are from Hobbs and M&S (I bought the M&S one for £8, unworn, in a charity shop). I also have a Boden merino one in 3 different colours - must have bought them in about 2010 and they're still going strong. I've also got a Ralph Lauren one which is cashmere/merino mix (had 75% off).

My current favourites are two which I bought in the Boden sale last year - probably supposed to be knee length, but midi on me. They have buttons all down the front (top buttons are all 'fake' and just for effect) and are belted. My absolute current favourite is my dark red Hobbs merino one - open necked 'shirt' style, but completely unadorned apart from a self-colour belt. I love this dress so much!

I wear them all with flat black slim-fitting knee high boots and long socks, with a slip underneath (hate tights). If it's freezing, I add leggings, but nobody can see them under the midi dress and long boots. I'm not going to be making fashion waves any time soon, but it's a look that suits me 100%.
