The cocktail dress hunt...

I have a nice meal booked and a cocktails evening at a posh hotel. I'm looking for a short cocktail dress, probably black as classic, that I can wear again and again. Reiss has some nice ones but £450. Budget up to £250.

I can't do black too near my face, so dresses where the top part is sheer or one shoulder ideally, or a slim deep v neck might work although that can make my waist look shorter. Empire or waist emphasis is fine. Long or mid sleeve preferably. Short. Some kind of glitz, sculpture, texture is nice.

Just not sure where to look. Any ideas?

I would honestly suggest to go to a few stores and try on as many dresses as possible. I personally am all for online shopping. But usually after I’ve gotten to know a brand and worn a few of their pieces.

I am aware that this is not what you asked, but are you sure that it absolutely has to be black?

Black near my face isn’t the best look for me either. And I have (semi) recently discovered that cocktail dresses in other colours give me the same amount of versatility but look so much better on me. No matter the neckline…

I agree that you might do better to find a colour that you enjoy wearing. People in cocktail dress should look like birds of paradise, lighting up the room.
