What do you wear for a relaxed dinner out?

I'm out of practice and what's "right" seems to have changed for so many occasions since Covid, where everything's got more casual.

That said I've always struggled for occasions that are somewhere between dressy and casual. I can do partywear, workwear and casual, but since smart jeans and a nice top died a death (a long time ago, when I would have worn them with heels) I have really struggled with what to wear for an event that's essentially casual but requires a bit of effort to look nice. E.g. a date in a pub or non fancy dinner.

What are you go tos? I like my wide leg jeans but struggle to put them with anything except a fitted tshirt and trainers.

I'd just wear jeans & trainers. I do wear plain dresses and trainers/other shoes too.

I don't think there are any events between dressy and casual, if it's informal you can wear what you like.

Jeans and a nice top is still an option. I just think the style of nice top has changed. Tbh I still wear skinny jeans which I know are totally out of fashion but they suit me. Then some sort of nice top that varies from luxurious fine knit type jumper to nice cami top. Shoes are where I find it trickier

Who says that smart jeans and a nice top & jacket have died a death? 😳

It's the only thing I would consider in the UK in winter (and most of summer too)
I have a mixture of boots of all sizes and designs, but they are all chosen for smart comfort.

Only do dresses at Xmas parties or abroad in summer.

rhiannon1967 · 26/10/2023 17:05

For me I always go for jeans - wide leg or flares, a shirt and a blazer. Then I might go for loafers or trainers. In winter add a sweater vest over the top of the shirt under the blazer.

Good Jeans are fine with a nice top or blouse , in summer I wear with flat strappy sandals or the ubiquitous white leather trainers and in winter some good boots, small heel, black suede, or knee high,

generally though I quite like midi bias cut skirts, a fitted top and sandals/trainers/boots, or nice dress and the same footwear combo.

Dress, tights and suede boots. But I don’t think jeans and a nice top look awful!

villagelife1992 · 26/10/2023 17:21

Pleated or silk skirt with a jumper and chunky boots or a wide leg jumpsuit

Littlelucas · 26/10/2023 17:23

I wear faux leather trousers or leggings instead of jeans - I have several pairs from hush and mint velvet (matte leather is more flattering than shiny). I would wear with a nice shirt or a top with a bit or sparkle or lace for interest. Heels or flat boots depending on how nice the restaurant is!

Lentilweaver · 26/10/2023 17:25

Corduroy wide leg trousers and a black /navy polo or fitted top with statement earrings.

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 26/10/2023 18:35

I like easy, drape-y, oversized things at night, so tend to put a big Shetland wool sweater or huge chunky cardigan over a long silky skirt.

These sorts of things but in much better colours.

Those last dresses/skirts… Matches £300-500… you have been warned!

PerditaProvokesEnmity · 26/10/2023 20:42

You ok, @Safiey? I used random photos to illustrate the shapes and proportions of the types of clothes I like to wear. I made it clear they were not my clothes. I did not in any way suggest that any reader here is obliged to go out and buy the garments in the photos.

You have gone to the trouble of seeking out the photos so that you could come here to mock my suggestions.

Have you really nothing better to do?

Lentilweaver · 26/10/2023 20:54

I have seen a lot of those satin skirts on Zara and Asos for less. I like that look too.

I would say this is something to wear for a meal out

Calm down. It takes two seconds to reverse find images!

Safiey · 26/10/2023 21:06

And I only looked since this is what I like wearing too!!

Rina66 · 26/10/2023 21:28

I've got some faux leather wide leg crops that I wear with a shirt or roll neck and sock boots. I've also just bought a black River Island crepe trench coat to wear with jeans and leather leggings.

Skirts wise, I wear a satin bias cut with chunky jumper and boots.

In that case - my apologies, @Safiey! There have been quite a few unpleasant posters on S&B lately, eager to attack anything unfamiliar, and I have absolutely no patience with it.

Safiey · 26/10/2023 21:52

@PerditaProvokesEnmity no worries, I didn’t realise there had been unpleasant people on here. Anyhow, you have great taste! I just wish I could find a cheaper version of the floaty skirt number. Ive been searching, but nothing is how I’d like it to be!
