Why won't perfume stay on me??

Bit random but as per the title, perfume just doesn't seem to 'stick' on me. I have friends who always smell lovely, they wear the same perfume and you always know when they're near as you can smell it.

Same with ex MIL, when my DC's have visited her whilst with their Dad, I know before they've even told me, as they smell like her

I use expensive perfume (lucky enough to have had some as a gift) yet once it's on I can't smell it anymore?? Am I just getting used to it? Asked DH and his comment was 'you always smell nice'

What am I doing wrong with perfume....I shower daily and apply perfume to neck, wrists and clothes?

I think you've just become used to it? Do you wear the same perfume everyday?
I switch mine up now for this very reason.
I love wearing a new sample as I can continuously smell it. After a few wears I can't smell it anymore.

I can't smell myself! I think we just get used to it.

MikeRafone · 26/10/2023 12:15

our nose is programmed to get used to a smell, so your nose doesn't detect your own smell

if you want perfume to last, layer with body lotion of the same perfume

Estée Lauder used to do this with their scents, but not sure its fashionable any longer

@RedCoatSearch I've recently started using a new one but still can't smell it

@MikeRafone thank you, haven't heard of that

Definitely layering. I'm probably a bit OTT but people say I smell nice! So if I was say wearing a vanilla perfume
Shower with bar soap then a vanilla or shea shower gel and often use a vanilla scrub
Moisturise with a vanilla body lotion
Vanilla perfume

I never get bad comments that it's too strong or anything just that I always smell nice/clean or in my colleagues words "you smell like cake" Grin

I'm sure someone will come along and tell me this is a load of rubbish, but I was told many moons ago that if you can't smell your perfume, it's a perfect match for you and others will be able to smell it.

Oblomov23 · 26/10/2023 18:42

Dh always smells nice.
I get a lot of compliments on my perfume, Dh says it's too strong, but everyone else likes it.

The cheap way to get perfume to "stick" to you is to use something oily first on your skin. Using a dab of vaseline before spraying perfume onto the same place works.

SulisMinerva · 26/10/2023 19:44

It can depend on your skin type - my skin is on the dry side and perfume doesn’t linger all day. Eau de parfum works better. Eau de toilet is generally not strong enough for me.

GettingStuffed · 26/10/2023 19:46

For me it depends on the perfume. Some wear off very quickly, others I can smell the next day

eatdrinkandbemerry · 26/10/2023 19:51

Vaseline on first then perfume

Luluem · 26/10/2023 19:56

Hi - have heard it’s to do (somewhat) with condition of your skin - drier skin flakes more and takes the scent with it, so make sure you moisturise (or the tip about Vaseline). In addition, perfume clings well to fabrics so consider spraying your clothes, hair too. Finally, when I look at perfume types online, they spray themselves like 10 times, rather than the one or two spritzes I would do. That also probably helps

Thanks everyone, some great tips there!

Tomorrow I will begin the experiment ☺️
