What to wear to a 40th birthday celebration in a pub?

I have a close friend's 40th birthday coming up and I'm at a loss as to what to wear. It's in their local pub but they're a sharp dresser and I can't imagine they'll just be in 'jeans and a nice top'. I'm wondering what people are wearing to these types of occasions at the moment? I normally wear jumpsuits but I'm getting bored of wrestling with them in toilet cubicles! All of my jeans are baggy and not particularly smart.

Happy to purchase a new outfit but I just am out of inspiration - any ideas gratefully received!

Party or meeting for drink?
Type of pub?

Yeah thank you, good point, it's a local pub but I think it's an actual party (having just reread the invitation!).

Midi dress
Wide leg trousers and top

i think skirts are making a comeback this season so maybe something to consider

I'd go for the type of midi dress that you can wear at any other events you have coming up. Maybe something that you can dress-up with a statement necklace, evening sandals etc for a party but also wear without the bling for daytime events.

Honestly I think ‘midi’ is dowdy for night time celebrations. You want either short and sharp or long and louche. A midi dress is day wear.

What sort of clothes at what sort of budget does you sharp dressing friend wear? (For comparison, obvs you don’t have to emulate their style.) How much do you want to spend and do you want something fashionable, or …?

This, with flat suede / velvet boots. Absolutely gorgeous with some huge chunky red knitwear slung over / across. It might seem dressy but because it’s silk it will look really natural when worn.

Or something like this, with tall pointy boots and a nonchalant attitude …

The first dress is absolutely gorgeous but I have to wear them above the knee otherwise I look old and frumpy.

I could definitely wear the second one, I have something similar in fact - thank you!

I'm wearing wide leg trousers and a top right now, in fact!
