What to buy in the US?

I'm going to the US soon and wondering which brands to look out for. Would be buying for teen children, me, husband, granny, the lot.

Any fab US brands to look out for while I'm there?

Not really. Most stuff you can get here now but I do pick up the big bottles of pain relief when I visit. I try to look in Sephora for brands I can’t get in the UK but they recently reopened here so that’s mostly gone too. You can still get occasional deals on things like Levi but the exchange rate is so poor it’s often not worth it.

Sorry! I did get a Stanley cup before tik tok made the brand viral.

I think it’s a case of shopping and, if you like something get it as long as it’s not cheaper back here.

Seainasive · 13/10/2023 07:52

Peanut butter M&Ms and Reese’s cups are the only things I’m asked to bring back now. Oh and Psycho Bunny Tshirts for my teens. They don’t ship to the UK

Toothpaste
Teeth Whitening strips
Banana Republic
J Crew
Athleta

McIntire · 13/10/2023 10:43

Oh, and western/cowboy boots

Very in here this year and so much more choice in the US. Don’t get too caught up in the moment though! Consider how they will look back home on the school run 😂

Mercurial123 · 13/10/2023 12:07

Trader Joe's sunscreen it's a copy of the much more expensive Super Goop.

Moredarkchocolateplease · 13/10/2023 12:10

J crew Tippi jumpers, take care of them and they last for years.

Smellyplant · 13/10/2023 13:50

Do not but Le Labo perfume thinking as it’s American it will be cheaper there. It’s not. Voice of bitter experience 🙁

poetryandwine · 13/10/2023 15:03

IIRC Clinique and Estee Lauder items are cheaper in America. Even though sales tax, which varies by state, is not included in the sticker price. This may be true of most American cosmetics and toiletries.

One of the Kirkland shampoo and conditioner sets (Costco own brand, if you happen to know a member) for dry hair is or was a very economical version of Purology (sp?). Just fantastic. I haven’t found it to be the same in the UK so I don’t know whether we use a different manufacturer here or whether Costco has changed its partner.

Yes, the American Crest Whitening Strips are more effective than anything we can get in a chemist.

Melatonin gummies
Paracetamol PM
Old Navy
Nike trainers

Smellyplant · 13/10/2023 19:53

Actually, I’m here and just been shopping double check all clothes. They all seem to be more here!

amarante · 13/10/2023 20:19

Where do you buy the whitening teeth strips?

RobinRounds · 13/10/2023 20:55

My DDs enjoyed their trip to Bath and Body Works when we were in the US in the summer, they seem to have good BOGOF deals in comparison to the branches here in the UK.

PlumPeony · 13/10/2023 21:11

Everlane
Madewell
Aritzia
Free people
Banana Republic
J Crew

Athleta (leisurewear)
American Eagle (teens)
Target

2023shady · 13/10/2023 21:12

Tree hut body scrubs are the most scrubby ones ever, I love them!
Saltair body range, really nice scents

TooningOut · 13/10/2023 21:13

Differin/adapalene, a type of retinol that's OTC in the US

cocksstrideintheevening · 13/10/2023 21:14

Not much anymore apart from the massive bottles of tylenol / Advil.

MartyFunkhouser · 13/10/2023 21:14

I second the Crest strips. We get them in Target. I also buy Tide pods and Chick-fil-A sauce.

And Secret deodorant.

babbi · 13/10/2023 21:15

Old Navy socks !

MissBattleaxe · 13/10/2023 21:15

Bath and Body works do amazing scented hand gels and the nicest room spray ever - Eucalyptus Lime. I absolutely filled a basket for just $38.

Perfectlystill · 13/10/2023 21:56

Love all these, thank you everyone!

I know the exchange rate is terrible, so I'm unlikely to get many bargains. But still fun to buy stuff you can't get over here.

Thank you!

I agree to secret deodorant. I was gutted during lockdown when I ran out as had been getting it on trips to the USA for 15 years. It is better than the more expensive one in a smaller package.

CinnamonBear · 14/10/2023 20:45

I stock up on the secret outlast stick every time I go. It's the only stuff that works for me.
